What Are The Worst Stains on Your Carpet & How Can You Remove Them

If you are like most homes in America, you know that your carpets get a lot of stains and wear. Even if you are careful and try your best to keep spills away from your carpets you will still have an occasional problem. The problem is that those mishaps can be one of the ones that are the hardest to remove and treat. The best way to get stains removed from your carpets is to make sure that they are treated as soon as possible. You also can make sure that your carpet is in good condition and treated well. That means that you should have your carpets cleaned professionally on a regular basis to make sure that they are as healthy as possible. This will make it easier to remove stains as they happen and leave the carpet looking and smelling much better.

Carpet Care 2000 lists some of the hardest to remove stains & what you can do to treat them.

Removing Red Juice or Wine Stains from Carpet: This is one of the most common stains and one of the very hardest to treat. Red coloring is hard to remove from your carpet fibers, whether you have dark or light colors. The red coloring will soak into the carpet fibers and stain them leaving a mess in their wake. The longer the spill is allowed to sit the harder it will be to remove and treat. Move quickly to dab away any excess liquid that you can as soon as you see the spill. Work from the outside in to ensure that you do not spread the stain any further. You can mix together two cups of water with two cups of vinegar and mix it in a spray bottle. You can spray the area with this mixture and let it soak before you dab away the excess and remove the stain.
How To Remove Coffee Spill Stains from Carpet: You sit down to enjoy a morning cup of coffee and the cup tips off the table and onto the carpet. This is another stain that can be difficult to treat. The acidity in the coffee will start to damage the carpet fibers. You can use a mixture of two cups warm water, two cups vinegar and two tablespoons to remove the stain. This will help to pull the spill away from the carpet and make it easier to clean up with a dry rag.

– Avoid using dyed or printed cloths, towels or paper towels. If you do, you can potentially inadvertently transfer the dye onto the upholstery or carpet, leaving you with a more difficult task.

Carpets are attracted to stains, not matter how careful you try to be. When children or pets are in the house, the chances double for carpets to be blemished by one kind of stain or another. Food, beverages, pet accidents, grass, mud, wax, grease, oil, beauty products, crafting paraphernalia, and so much more could be causing stains. When addressing the stain it is important to know how to treat them, and most especially, what not to do.

Carpet Care 2000 would like address some of the carpet stain removal don’ts that many people are guilty of.

Before we get into the chastising side of carpet stain removal, we would like to share a few helpful tips.
– If possible, know what the materials were used to construct your carpet. Some materials need to avoid certain chemical components, and you do not want to cause any damage to the carpet itself while tending to a stain.
– More often than not, you know what the stains are; try to ensure you clean it using the appropriate cleaning solutions.
Basic ‘don’t’ tips for removing carpet stains:
– Do not use hot water for treating stains. Liken to laundry stains; hot elements will set the stain in, and it could be next to impossible to remove the stain. An exception to the rule is when you need to remove wax, and you place a hot iron over paper to draw the wax up. Still extreme temperatures are not recommended.
– Do not skip the patch test. Whether you use a commercially formulated carpet cleaning product, or store bought ingredient, or home remedy mixtures, you should test the cleaner in an inconspicuous area to ensure the fibers integrity or color is not compromised. Some chemicals can break down the fibers and ruin the composition, where others could lighten the color of your carpet in an attractive way.
– Do not scrub or rub. Natural impulse is apply high volumes of pressure and scrub on the stain vigorously. Avoid this impulse. When carpet stains get violent treatment, the stain can spread out and/or get pushed deeper into the fibers. Always blot the stains with mild to medium pressure.
– Do not let the stain fester. Most are guilty of not treating stains immediately due to time restraints. But this could result in serious consequences. The longer a stain is able to set, the harder it is to remove. All stains should be cared for as soon as possible.
– Do not clean the stain from the inside out. To keep the stain contained, it is better to work from the outside towards the center of the stain. This avoids making bigger mess.

While DIY carpet odor removal seems like a great alternative to professional cleaning, removing odors usually turns into a project that needs more than a touch of baking soda sprinkled over the offensive area before vacuuming. Some at-home remedies such as white vinegar may work perfectly for fruity odors such as those associated with a spilled can of soda. For strong returning odors, professional intervention is worth its weight in gold. Some stains and their associated smells can be elusive leaving with the impression that they are gone only to return sometime later more offensive than ever and leaving you with a feeling of despair.

Pet owners love their pets, but urine odor can be a problem on carpets. Home remedies usually provide a temporary solution and cleaning agents purchased from supermarket chains and home improvement stores are usually ineffective. If you have ever tried to remove stains from your carpet, you know that it is a battle to get it all the way out and there are some stains that are harder to remove than others. The dreaded red mystery stain is one of the worst and the hardest to get out. Another one that seems to come up often is crayon or wax. There are several reasons that crayon or wax can be on the carpet. One of the biggest ways to have your house smelling great is to use melting wax. The wax is melted down to a liquid and the aroma is extended through the entire house or room. The bad part is if the wax is spilled in any way it will dry right away and seem impossible to remove. Another problem comes from toddlers that are overly excited to show off their art skills. It is all too easy to draw or color a picture for your mom and slip the crayon onto the carpet and extend the color to the flooring. Crayons are also a wax that is tinted with color to allow the color to transfer to paper. Wax is one of the hardest substances to remove from carpets and it takes a serious set of steps. Fortunately, if you follow these carefully, you can remove the stain!

Carpet Care 2000 Lists the Steps to Remove Wax & Crayon from Your Carpets.

Remove Excess Wax from Carpet: This is the first step when cleaning any kind of stain from carpeting. You want to take a minute to pick up any pieces that are easily removed from the carpet. This will stop the stain from getting worse and bleeding further into the carpet fibers. You can use a small pair of tweezers or your fingers to grab away what you can. Be sure to dispose of it so that it does not accidentally end up on another spot.
Use Heat To Remove Wax and Crayon from Carpet: The best way to remove a substance such as wax from carpet is to use heat. The wax is easier to move around when it is in a liquid state. You need to take a heated iron and a brown paper sack to get the process started. Heat the iron to the hottest setting without steam. Once it has time to heat up, place the brown paper sack on the spot and use the iron with some pressure to heat the sack up. This will change the wax or crayon to liquid again and the sack will soak it up and pick it up off the carpet.
Clean the Stained Area With Carpet Cleaner and Rag: This is the last step of the process. Use whatever carpet cleaner you have already tested and found safe for your specific carpets. Make sure you use a clean rag to dab at the spot to finish removing any residual color or stain.
Call A Professional Carpet Cleaning Company: This is the last step but the easiest way to get rid of stains on your carpets. A professional carpet cleaner has the tools and equipment to remove even the hardest to remove stains on your carpets. Call Carpet Care 2000 for all of your carpet cleaning needs!

If you have not cleaned your area rugs for quite some time, then you have quite a daunting task on your hands. Area rugs cannot be treated like regular carpet, especially when it comes to a thorough cleaning. It is important to clean your rugs regularly; however the busy hustle and bustle of life can often deter our rug cleaning responsibilities. Dust mites and other allergens can slowly begin to collect within the fibers of your area rug and not only look unattractive, but also lower the quality of air that is in your home.

How to Clean an Area Rug at Home

One of the most important steps you can take when it comes to caring for your areas rugs is to vacuum them regularly. The term “regularly” can mean different things to different households. For example a home that has a lot of small children running around and a couple of four legged friends as well is more likely to accumulate dust, dirt and grime that is brought in from the outdoors and collects on the surface of your area rug. A home of empty nesters has a significantly less amount of debris coming into their home due to little foot traffic and less action going on. Vacuuming once a day is great, try to not go longer than three days max without vacuuming your area rug.

Beware of Purchasing Over the Counter Rug Cleaners

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when it comes to area rug cleaning is purchasing the wrong type of cleaner. Many over the counter cleaners will advertise that they are a “one size fits all” type of cleaner. Unfortunately people find out the hard way that this is not true. Many beautiful and expensive rugs become damaged, not from a spill or accident, but from the wrong type of cleaner being used to clean up the spill or accident. Never use an over the counter cleaner on your area rug.

Carpet Care 2000 lists some of the health benefits to having your carpets cleaned by a professional.

Professional Carpet Cleaning Can Remove Dust Mites & Allergens: There is no way to keep dust and allergens off your carpets no matter how careful you are. Your home is open to outdoor elements and people that come in and out. This means that all the dust and allergens are being brought in and circulated through the air most likely from the AC unit. They can also be kicked up by simply walking around. These allergens and dust can cause trouble with people that have allergies and asthma. When you call a professional carpet cleaner they can come out and clean the carpets with their professional strength suction. This is what is needed to get deep down in the fibers and remove dust, dirt and dust mites. When these allergens are removed the air quality in your home will go up and that will make it a better place for everyone especially for those that struggle with allergies and asthma.
Carpet Cleaning Can Remove Bacteria, Viruses & Germs: If anyone has been sick in your home in the last 30 days you could still have the virus or bacteria that has caused it living on your carpets. It has been proven that the flu and cold germs are able to live and thrive for a month and that means that you could be spreading the same illness after you think the virus is over. The best way to ensure that you are not making your family sick again is to have the carpets cleaned. The high heat and heavy dusty vacuuming can kill the germs and remove any leftover debris.
