When you are choosing the carpet for your home, you want your choice to be something you really love. Chances are, you will have this carpet for years before you replace it. Not only do you need to choose the right pile type, but you need to consider the many colors that are available to you. How in the world do you choose the right one? Carpet Care 2000 is here to talk about the steps you should take when choosing the right color carpet for your home.

Consider Lighting When Picking Carpet Colors

If the room you are choosing carpet for is a well-lit room, it can handle dark colors much easier than a room with little to no natural sunlight. Dark colors do run the risk of fading in the sun though, so lighter colors will help you avoid that problem. In this case, you should consider choosing a carpet that is lighter and will help brighten an otherwise dark room.

Best Carpet Color for High Traffic Areas

You want to think about the amount of traffic the area you are carpeting is going to receive. If you choose a carpet that is too light, you might regret it. We have all seen what a lot of traffic can do to light colored carpet. Those unsightly grey marks on carpet can be hard to get rid of. There are many neutral color choices that handle high traffic areas very well without being too light to hide heavy traffic.

Classic Colors or Current Carpet Color Trends?

There are several carpet choices that can be tied to an era, like the 70s. You don’t want people to look at your house in 20 years and know the decade you chose your carpet in. When you stick to classic colors, you are choosing a timeless look rather than what is a current favorite.

Carpet Design Ideas for Your Living Space

You need to decide if you want your carpet to stand out in the room. When you are choosing design choices in your home, you will be selecting focal points that highlight that design. You should decide if you want your carpet to be one of those focal points, or if you would rather it blend in with the walls. If you choose to have it blend in with your walls it leaves them open to redecorating more frequently with other aspects and design choices that are easier to change.

Use Carpet Swatches to Sample Color

When you are choosing the right color carpet for your home, the best advice is to take full advantage of the carpet swatches before making your choice. By bringing home carpet swatches, you are able to see them in different lighting throughout the day in your home. This will help you pin down the right color for your carpet.

We don’t wash all our laundry the exact same way and we shouldn’t clean all carpets the same way either. The three main types of carpet are Standard Pile, Berber and Shag or Long Pile. The one way that is exactly the same in keeping each of these types of carpets clean is to vacuum your carpets at least once a week. It’s important to use a vacuum that has a HEPA (high efficiency particle air) filter as it will prevent dust, bacteria and allergens to be released into the air. HEPA filters trap more contaminants than they release.

Cleaning Standard Pile Carpeting

Standard pile is the most common carpeting that’s found in homes. It stands up to at home cleaning the best. It isn’t tightly woven, so the use of a brush along with the suction in vacuuming is beneficial. This will keep the dirt from getting deep into the carpet and padding. Spills need to be taken care of as soon as possible by blotting as much as you can with a clean cloth that has been soaked in hot water and laundry detergent. Repeat the process using only hot water until the stain is gone.

How to Clean Berber Carpet

Berber carpet is named after the Berber people in Northern Africa which is where it was first invented. The tightly woven fibers in Berber carpet allow less penetration of dirt and dust which is important, especially for those who live in a dusty terrain with a dry climate. The tightly woven fibers of Berber produce an ideal carpet flooring. The biggest pro to this carpet is its ability to resist dirt and grime. The biggest con is that because it’s woven so tightly, it is prone to snags and pulls. It needs to be taken care of the right way and drying times are longer due to the tight weaving. Berber carpets need a vacuum that uses a suction function instead or a brush to prevent snags from occurring and excessive wear and tear. You should always hire a professional to steam clean your Berber carpets. They use high powered equipment that prevents the carpet from remaining wet for too long. This will prevent bacteria and mold from forming. Spills on Berber need to be taken care of right away by sprinkling baking soda on it and waiting a few minutes. Vacuum the baking soda up and soak up any extra moisture by blotting with a clean cloth.

How to Clean Shaggy Long Pile Carpeting

Shag carpeting is also known as long pile. The long carpet fibers make shag carpeting the perfect environment for dirt grime to hang out unseen. Regular vacuuming is especially important when you have shag carpet and it will need to be cleaned more often than other types of carpet. Some shag carpeting manufacturers will also tell you specifically which vacuums work for the carpet you have. They are the hardest to clean which is why it’s best to leave it to the professionals. This will prevent the fibers from getting damaged prematurely and the professional equipment will also ensure all the dirt and grime is removed.

The look of having natural stone in your bathroom or shower sets off any design with elegance. However it can become a serious battle keeping mold, mildew, and hard water stains from marring your beautiful stone walls. Carpet Care 2000 knows how hard it can be to keep natural stone with its silk clean look. Most of the time people will clean the stone the same way as any other bathroom. However natural stone has its own needs and demands when it comes to maintenance and cleaning. We will share a method that works great with cleaning your natural stone bathroom and shower walls.

Best Natural Stone Cleaners

Make sure you do your homework on the cleaners that you use on natural stones. Many have high acid content that can damage the finish of the natural stone. When shopping for cleaners, make sure it’s safe to use on the natural stone. Do not use vinegar or other homemade cleaners to save money. When it comes to natural stone you will want to use the cleaners designed for stone. Vinegars and such can damage the surface. Also be sure to wear cleaning gloves when you use the cleaners. Most commercial cleaners need to be diluted with water, so follow the directions. Use a soft scrubbing brush or sponge. Anything too rough can strip the finish that protects the stone. After scrubbing, rinse with water. Regular cleaning will prevent mold, mildew, and hard water build up.

How to Dissolve Soap Residue

To remove soap scum, make sure you get a soap scum cleaner, again safe for natural stones. After spraying the cleaner you will need to wait a few minutes to step in. Don’t use a sponge or brush on soap scum. Instead use a plastic squeegee and scrape the soap scum off. For older soap scum, you can use ammonia. Sometimes the commercial cleaners aren’t as effective. If you want to use the ammonia, mix 1/2 cup of ammonia with 1 gallon of water. This will be the best solution cleaner for natural stone.

Mold & Mildew Removal Services

For stubborn mildew and mold, get a high quality cleaner safe on stone and allow the cleaner to set for 1 hour, and then rinse the stone off with water. You can also use a degreaser on natural stone. Use 1 part degreaser and 10 parts water to create a solution. This will get rid of those stubborn molds and mildews. When you apply the cleaner use a plastic scrubbing brush to remove the affected areas. You may want to do a test spot to make sure your stone walls react properly. Most people do not wipe down the shower after every use. However to keep mildew, molds, soap scum and hard water stains off your stone, wipe the water off after each shower use. This will prevent problems from happening. Use a micro fiber cloth and if desired, baking soda after each use. This will help keep your natural stone clean and your weekly cleanup easier.

Stains on your carpet can drive you crazy. Rust can be a common stain and can be caused by wet toys, leaky windows, metal furniture legs getting wet and other sources in your home. Rust is caused by a chemical reaction in nature that makes it very hard to remove. If you are patient and do a little bit of research beforehand, you might just be able to remove a rust stain from your carpet. And if not, you can always call a professional carpet cleaner like Carpet Care 2000!

Tips for How to Remove Rust Stains from Your Carpet

For the best results you first need to let the stain dry. After it’s completely dry, you can scrap off any rust that may flake off with a scraping tool like a butter knife. If you manage to get a lot off this way, the stain will be easier to remove. If you aren’t careful though, you risk damaging the carpet, so take your time and be as gentle as possible. Once you have removed as much of the rust as possible, you’ll be able to see exactly what you’re dealing with. The mildest solution is a good place to start to save your carpet from possible damage. Before you start using any cleaning products it’s always a good idea to test them in an area that is hidden to see if it will change the appearance of your carpet through staining or bleeding. Mix a mild detergent that is absent of alkalies with cool water. It’s better to use cool water as hot water can set stains and make them harder to remove or cause them to become permanent. Try to use one that isn’t too deeply colored as it will do a much better job. You should never rub a stain when you’re trying to remove it, always blot with a clean cloth to lift the stain. Rinse the cloth often to keep the water clean. If you aren’t successful, then you can try another method but allow the spot to dry completely before you do.

Homemade Rust Remover for Carpets

Many stains can be removed with lemon juice. All you need to do is mix it with a dash of salt. This will form an abrasive cleanser that is mild. When you’re using it to try and remove rust, you should put it in a spray bottle and spray the stain till it’s slightly damp and then start blotting it. Cream of tartar mixed with water will make a paste that can be used for rust stains. Mix enough of the two together to form a paste that is like toothpaste and spread it on the stain. Leave it for a few minutes and use cool water to start blotting. Vinegar may also prove useful in removing rust stains. Pour it right onto the stain and let it sit. After a few hours you will know it if was successful. Blot the area with clean clothes to remove any remaining rust. If the vinegar smell lingers, you can use a light lemon mixture to get rid of it.

Children and adults alike across the country are currently planning their costumes for this Halloween. It’s the one night that you can transform into whatever you want and it is socially acceptable. When this transformation takes place, it usually requires a certain amount of makeup to get the job done. If some of that makeup for some reason gets on your carpet, it can seem impossible to remove it. Carpet Care 2000 is here to talk about how to get that Halloween makeup out of your carpet and upholstery.

Remove Makeup and Test Carpet Before You Get Started

Before you do anything, you need to remove as much of the excess makeup as possible. This should be done gently, so that you don’t push the oil based makeup deeper into the fibers of the carpeting. Once that is done, you should test a small area of your carpeting; somewhere that will be discreet, to make sure the cleaners you are using will cause no discoloration.

Blot or Rub Carpet Stains

When you are trying to remove Halloween makeup from carpeting, it is very important that you blot the stain rather than rub. When you rub that oil based makeup, it will push it deeper into the fibers and will be almost impossible to get out. Isopropyl alcohol is great to remove Halloween makeup. It should be applied to a clean cloth and then used to blot the stain. You should never allow the alcohol to penetrate the carpet fibers too deeply, as this can cause damage to the base of your carpet and it can start to fall apart. Don’t completely saturate the carpet with alcohol.

How to Remove Stubborn Carpet Stains from Carpet

If you still can see the stain in your carpet, you might want to try filling a bucket with warm, clean water and a small amount of detergent. Once you have worked the warm, soapy water into the stain, you should spray clean warm water from a spray bottle on the stain and blot to remove the excess liquid and soap from your carpet. If there is any soapy residue, it will attract dirt and create a new problem.

Homemade Hydrogen Peroxide Carpet Stain Remover

After all of this, if you still can see that stubborn Halloween makeup stain, you might want to try using 3% hydrogen peroxide to remove the rest. It is still imperative that you are blotting the stain rather than rubbing. This can be repeated numerous times until you can no longer see any color left in the fibers of your carpet.

When carpet isn’t installed correctly or has heavy items dragged on top it, wrinkles can develop over time. They are both an eyesore and a potential safety risk for trips and falls. The best possible results come from moving all the furniture out of the room but sometimes it may be unreasonable to move very heavy furniture. It is possible to work around them!

DIY Steps to Stretch Carpet

1. Starting in one corner of the room, begin pulling the carpet back from the tack strip. Don’t pull the carpet away from all four corners as one side of the carpet needs to remain anchored.
2. All staples or tacks need to be pulled from the pad before lifting it from the floor. When you pull, you need to leave enough space to work along the tack strips.
3. Remove all the tack strips. Wear work gloves when you’re handling old or new strips to avoid injury from the setting nails and the razor-sharp tacks.
4. Now you need to install the new tack strips with the gripping nails pointed towards the wall and keep them ¼ inch from the wall. Hammer the setting nails using a chisel or pry bar.
5. You can rent a knee kicker, power stretcher and a carpet cutter from a home improvement store. Cutting carpet with a carpet cutter is easier than using a utility knife. The knee kicker will help stretch the carpet in smaller areas and will work well with the power stretcher for the larger areas.
6. Align the pad, trim it next to the tack strip and staple it down every three inches and where there are any seams.
7. The carpet can now be laid back down and stretched using the power stretcher to smooth any wrinkles. You will need to make sure the power stretcher is set correctly. If it’s too hard to push the lever than the carpet is being stretched too tightly.
8. The power stretcher is used to stretch the long lengths of the room. The knee kicker should be placed about 6 inches from the wall and using the area of your leg just above the kneecap to finish the stretch.
9. Before you trim the extra carpet you need to embed the edge of it onto the tack strip.
10. Use the carpet cutter along the freshly-stretched edge of the carpet to trim the extra carpet and tuck it up against the wall or woodwork.

Walking into a room that has inches of water saturating the carpet can be quite disheartening. Water can be destructive and cause damages to your home that can be costly to repair. One of the biggest damages takes place on your flooring. Depending on the water you are dealing with, your carpet could be saved without risking the health of you and your family. Carpet Care 2000 is here to talk about some steps you can take to salvage the carpet in your house after water damage.

Find the Source of the Water Disaster Emergency

This step is important for obvious reasons. The first thing you need to do is determine whether or not you are dealing with sanitary water or unsanitary water. This will be the deciding factor as to whether or not you can salvage your carpeting. If you are dealing with sewage water or other sources of contaminated water, the carpet will need to be thrown out immediately to avoid a health risk.

Stop the Flow of Water

Until the water leak is fixed, you will continue to have a problem. Find the problem and eliminate it so you can focus on making arrangements to clean it up. This may require the help of professionals including plumbers if the leak is too complicated to fix on your own.

Remove Excess Standing Water After a Flood

With the use of a wet/dry vacuum, try to remove as much of the water as possible. These vacuums are the most effective way to get rid of water that has accumulated from a leak. If you find you don’t have the equipment to remove water, you may want to consider hiring the work done by professionals that have the proper tools and equipment to make clean up quick.

Use Portable Blower Fans to Speed Up Carpet Drying Time

After you have removed all the water that you can, bringing in large fans can help speed up the drying process. The fans need to be left on the floor for quite some time. The carpet may feel dry to you, but it most likely isn’t dry all the way through. If your home has sustained water damage, the fans need to be left on for a week to ensure the flooring is completely dried.

Dehumidifiers Help Remove Moisture

Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air and help speed up the drying process as well. As they remove moisture from the air, it helps keep the air cool as well and this will keep mold and mildew growth to a minimum.

Steam Carpet Cleaning

After your carpet has been through water damage, you will need to have your carpets steam cleaned to help with odor associated with water damage and to sanitize the carpeting. Most of the time carpet padding needs to be replaced after water damage, so this may have to take place as well.

Clean Up After a Flood

Any surface that was affected by water, should be cleaned. You will need to most likely clean the walls and baseboards, as well as check any of the furniture that was in the room and could have sustained damage as well.

As summer comes to a close and fall rolls in, the Parvo Virus reaches its full strength. We know that Parvo is a deadly virus that affects canines worldwide. For those who have had the misfortune of having your canine companion infected with the Parvo Virus, know the virus is in your yard outside and your home inside. Once your dog has been infected, they will need constant care by your veterinarian for the next few days. While they are away, you will need to prepare your home for their return home. Carpet Care 2000 will help guide you in removing any pet stains and rid your home of the Parvo Virus.

How Long Does Parvo Virus Last on Carpets & Other Surfaces

For those who may not fully understand Parvo, know that it is an extremely contagious virus that can be deadly towards canines. This virus is spread through infected dog feces and some believe even vomit. Even if your dog steps on or sniffs an infected area, your dog can contract this terrible virus. Symptoms of Parvo are lack of interest in food, tiredness, and followed by vomiting and diarrhea. Once your dog is diagnosed with Parvo, they will need constant care from your vet. As they are recovering, you will need to disinfect your home or they can get the virus all over again. The hard surfaces can be disinfected with a mixture of 10 parts water to one part bleach. You will want to spray the diluted bleach all over the outside areas that your dog will be exposed to and inside on all hard surfaces. However carpet and other fabrics can’t be sprayed with bleach without leaving bleach stains. This is one of the many reasons why Parvo is hard to get out of carpets. Another reason is that the Parvo sinks deep into the carpet’s fibers. Parvo causes uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea that often stains and infects our carpets.

Protocol for How to Clean, Disinfect & Remove Parvo from Carpet

To clean stains and remove the virus, we suggest you use a carpet steamer. Begin by using just hot water in the carpet steamer and go over your entire carpeted areas. Next let’s deal with the stains. Vomit is usually just bile but the diarrhea stain can be mixed with blood, which is a common aspect of Parvo. For the stains, you can try using any pet stain removers or you can try a hydrogen peroxide and baking soda mixture. This may lift the stains a little better if blood was present in the diarrhea. Allow the cleaner or mixture to sit for 20 minutes. Then use the steamer with just hot water inside to soak and suck up the stain. Once the stains are gone then it is time to disinfect. Look for a pet-safe disinfectant labeled and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that kills the Parvo Virus. There are different types available on the market, read the label for directions. Many require a dilution with water. Use the disinfectant cleaner in the carpet steamer and cover the entire carpeted areas. Make sure to go slow and give the disinfectant time to soak into the carpet. Let the disinfectant set on the carpet. Again see the direction for the length of time required. It may also recommend that you rewash the carpet with hot water again.

Carpets are a completing accessory to many rooms in homes and businesses. When it comes to maintenance, some are more diligent than others in preserving the vibrancy, cleanliness, and overall care to expand the lifespan and the aesthetic appeal. When it comes to stains, there are many things homeowners do that can make that stain worse. Some stubborn stains and chemical spots often require an expert’s touch to repair or remove the stains, but there are some stains, that if properly treated, you can remove yourself. Today Carpet Care 2000 would like to take the opportunity to share the “don’ts” of carpet stain removal.

Carpet Stain Removal Don’ts

– Before you begin treating any stain, it is important to know what the fibers are constructed of before you begin stain removal. Some fibers react negatively with chemicals or even natural household ingredients. If you are not sure, it is more optimal to invest in a professional cleaning to avoid undo damage.
Do not skip the patch test. Many people forego the patch test and live to regret it. The test patch should be conducted in an inconspicuous location to ensure the commercial pre-made carpet cleaner or natural remedy concoction will not compromise the integrity or color of your carpet.
Do not let the stain fester. In a fast paced lifestyle tending to carpet stains may seem impossible to contend with at the time it occurred. But do note, the longer the stain is allowed to set, the harder it will be to remove, if at all.
Avoid dyed cloths, towels, and paper towels to clean stains. The cute floral prints often adorning paper towels or the pretty dyed cloths and/or towels can easily transfer dyes or the print onto the carpet when using them to remove stains. Whenever possible, utilize white and plain paper towels, cloths, and towels.
Do NOT use hot water to treat stains. Some stains may require lukewarm water or cool water which is acceptable. Hot water can easily cause dyes to set in the carpet making removal near impossible.
Never scrub, scour, or rub stains out. Instincts and temper tantrums often invoke a vigorous treatment of removing stains. Resist the urge, doing the “I’m mad at the world” washing will only spread the stain out and deeper, making the stain far more difficult to remove. Instead, blot the stain, working the outer perimeter towards the center for optimal stain removal.
Do not over saturate. The old adage “more is better” is not the case when dealing with liquid on carpet. If excessive cleaner is needed it is recommended to practice the “wash, rinse, blot dry, repeat” method. Water damage can occur under the carpet, infect the carpet pad, and even the subfloor, producing mold and other water related damages. Keep the liquids contained as you clear away stains.
Don’t skip the drying process. Towels weighted down can absorb much of the excessive liquid. Placing a fan or opening a window to encourage the carpet to dry is important after the stain has been lifted.
Do not skip the vacuum step at the end. Though the stain is removed, the carpet fibers were just abused to an extent. To ensure the carpet fibers bounce back, vacuum the areas and in so doing any dry remnants are sucked away.

Filtration soiling or draft soiling appears as dark areas or spots along the edge of carpeted rooms and under doorways. In extreme cases it can also be found in areas closer to the middle of rooms. Filtration soiling may also be referred to as fogging or dust marks and is caused by contaminated air blowing across or through the carpet. Think of your carpet as though it were a huge filter which catches dirt and removes it from the air. The resulting dirt and debris not only looks unsightly it can be difficult to remove without professional intervention.

What Causes Carpet Filtration Soiling?

In the majority of cases, the airflow is created by your heating and air system, the thermal expansion or the contraction of air along with natural air currents throughout your homes structure. It can also be caused by air blowing through windows which remain open on a regular basis. Other causes of filtration soiling include:
• Gaps under the baseboard which create black lines
• Gaps between floorboards which can allow dust to travel upwards
• Holes in the carpet caused by nails
• Gaps under doors
• Gaps under between drapery and the carpet
• Air vents

How to Prevent Soil Filtration from Occurring in Your Home or Business

Dirt and debris can become deposited deep down in the carpet pile, even as far down as the backing of your carpet. To help prevent the damage from soil filtration, vacuum and wipe the edges of your carpet regularly along with scheduling your professional carpet cleaning appointment with your Carpet Care 2000 carpet cleaning specialist. Filtration soiling is further amplified by items that produce smoke such as cigarettes and burning candles. Leaving your inside doors open as much as possible will also help prevent filtration soil from accumulating in doorways.

Preserve Your Carpets with a Deep Steam Carpet Cleaning

In addition to your regular vacuuming protocol, your Carpet Care 2000 carpet cleaning specialist recommends deep cleaning your carpets at least twice a year. Our revolutionary cleaning protocols are designed to remove the sticky soil and oily build up that vacuuming alone won’t remove. Oils from cooking vapors, air pollution, pet dander and dirt tracked into your home and deposited onto the fibers of your carpets can cause a gradual and significant change in the colors of your carpeting. While the color of your carpet is in no way lost completely, it is buried under a film which will continue to allow dry soil to be attracted and buried in the carpet fibers.

Hot Water Exaction Removes Filtration Soiling & Ground In Dirt from Carpets

Your Carpet Care 2000 carpet cleaning specialists recommend the use of specially formulated cleaning solutions combined with a powerful hot water extraction system which is specially designed to remove all traces of dirt and other debris from your carpets. The hot water extraction process consists of applying the cleaning solution deep into the carpet pile before using the extractor to remove all traces of soil and cleaning solutions which are then deposited into a truck mounted unit parked outside your home. One of the many benefits of this system is that it only requires a short period of down time which means your carpets will be cleaned and sanitized and ready for use again almost immediately. Our professional carpet cleaning is designed to remove at least 97% of dirt and bacteria from your carpeting along with dramatically increasing the lifespan of your carpets.
