We take pride in the way our homes look and many of us feel it is an extension of our identity. We make renovations in our home to make them as comfortable and classy as possible and natural stone adds beauty. Some of the most popular natural stone choices in our State of California include Granite, Marble, Slate, Limestone and Travertine. However, as time passes, stone floor tiles will lose their luster, the grout can discolor and the stone can become rough. This will make the whole house look old and neglected. The cleaning process with natural stone uses diamond abrasives beneath a rotary machine. This will resurface/remove a light amount of stone to get just below the etch marks and scratches. Water will be used in the polishing and honing steps to have the clean finish last longer.

Professional Natural Stone Floor & Other Surfaces

1. Only use a company that will start the process by deep cleaning your stone floors and other surfaces; and focus on all the areas that need extra care. If there are heavily soiled grout joints, cracks and ridges, they will collect extra dirt. Part of the process includes a neutralizing steam rinse extraction.
2. Remove scratches from natural stone. Resin pads that are coarse will be used to remove scratches and blemishes. Professionals will use these pads on the stone cleaner that will take care of the signs of chemical etching. We will also use water in the process to prevent dust from flying around to add to the cleanup.
3. Stone polishing. When stone floors and surfaces are polished, it will give it a brand-new look. There are different kinds of polishes to give the stone different looks with benefits to each different polish. The company you choose should be able to recommend the best one for your floor. There are even environmentally-friendly techniques that can be used along with equipment and chemicals that can give your floors a long-lasting shine without hurting the planet.
4. Protecting your natural stone with sealer. It is always ideal to finish the cleaning process with a sealer to make the job a successful one. For a protective seal to be formed on your newly cleaned floors, a clear solvent based impregnating sealer will be applied to form a protective shield. When your stone floors are sealed after they’ve been cleaned, you will be protecting it from the everyday spills that will occur. You can even use color enhancing sealers that are great at bringing out the color of limestone, slate, travertine and flagstone. This will work to seal the stone and bring out it’s natural beauty.
5. Natural Stone Aftercare. Once the floor is cleaned and sealed, the job isn’t done. If you want your natural stone cleaning to last you will need to take steps to do so. There’s a right way to mop and care for your stone floor to make the cleaning process last longer. Professionals can give you some tips.

Carpets attracts a variety of assailants; dirt, dust, dust mites, pet dander, dead skin cells, and many other examples of particulates and debris. Carpets also accrue stains from food, beverages, pets, chemicals, and other such potential stain causing agents, as well as any odors that are attached to the stains and other means. But there are some other contaminants that have the potential to be easily found within the carpet fibers; mold, mildew, allergens, pollutants, and other microbes. Additionally, there can be even be something more sinister lurking in the piles of carpeting waiting to ambush you, your kids, and your pets; fleas. Considering the very real possibility that fleas can have been unknowingly brought into your home, laid eggs, and now you have an infestation, we at Carpet Care 2000 would like relates some tips and advice on how to get those fleas out of your carpets.

How to Get Rid of Fleas in Your Carpet

Vacuum Cleaning: Vacuuming may seem a too simple solution for removing fleas, but it is one of the most effective methods. This easily performed technique sucks up fleas in all their lifecycles; eggs, larva, pupae, and adults. Killing off the adult fleas is efficient enough to remove the infestation, as soon the next generations will quickly evolve and pick up where the adults left. Vacuuming disposes of the infestation as well as their pre-digested blood feces that closely resemble coarse ground pepper that the larvae eat. The vibrations will stimulate the pupae and motivate them to leave their cocoon, making the removal all more efficient.
Vacuuming the fleas out of the carpet will take precise and methodical detailing. Vacuum the length of the room in strips to ensure thoroughness; roll over your carpet at a slow steady pace. Use your hose around the edges and corners and don’t neglect under the furniture. Repeat the vacuuming procedure daily for two weeks to ensure all the fleas have been completely removed. Dispose of the vacuum contents in the outside trash bin to avoid recontamination.
Baking Soda & Salt: If you have more peace of mind than just vacuuming, there are some applications that can confirm the flea’s demise. You will need enough salt and baking soda to spread over the size of your carpets. The salt and baking soda dehydrate fleas and their eggs, forcing them to retreat. If you use this method, keep socks or slippers on and keep pets and children away.
1) From left to light, moderately sprinkle salt to cover the surface.
2) Immediately follow with a liberal application of baking soda in a like manner.
3) With a broom, agitate the salt and baking soda into the fibers by using sweeping motions. After you have completed the task, allow it to set for 12 hours. Avoid having children and pets come into contact with the carpet as the salt can irritate the skin.
4) After the 12 hours, thoroughly vacuum the particles.
5) Repeat this method once a week until all evidence of fleas are gone.
Diatomaceous Earth: Another method that is natural and effective is using diatomaceous earth.
1) Combine 1 part diatomaceous earth and 1 part baking soda. Mix well. Do not allow the mixture to become moist as it will become ineffective.
2) Moderately apply a layer of the homemade flea powder to your carpet, furniture, beds, and other surfaces.
3) For at least 24 hours, leave the powder on your carpet to make sure all eggs, larva, pupa and adults are eliminated.
4) Vacuum up the powder thoroughly.
Do note that even though diatomaceous earth is non-toxic and safe for ingestion, it is presented in a fine powder which has the potential to irritate your eyes, nose or throat. Be sure to take safety measures during application and vacuuming and wrap a handkerchief or shirt around your face, or ear safety glasses/goggles and a basic mask.

Have your little ones inadvertently found some matches, or did your carpets get singed from a cigarette or candle? Regardless as to the cause of the incident, you now have a burn mark on your carpets. Most believe it is hopeless and that you can’t fix carpet that has been burned. However, depending on the severity of the burn, you could actually repair your carpet and remove the burn stain. Carpet Care 2000 will share a few methods on how to remove burn marks and get them out of your carpets.

Cut Out Burnt Carpet Fibers & Replace with Remnant

The first and easiest way if the carpet hasn’t been burned too badly is to start by using some scissors and cut out the burned part of the carpet. Afterward, use some remnants of the carpet if you have them or cut out a corner or edge piece that won’t be seen and glue it into the carpet fibers, where the burn spot was removed. Whenever you replace carpet it is always wise to keep a few of the left over pieces in the event you need to make some of these types of repairs.

Carpet Patching

If a remnant doesn’t exist, there is another method. Once again cut out the burned part of the carpet like before. Use a mild detergent and clean around the affected area with a sponge. Then cut out a larger piece of carpet, bigger than the burned spot in an unseen area or with left over pieces. Then trim the piece or carpet until it fits snugly into the burned area. Once finished, place the new piece of carpet on top of the burned area. When trimming the new or replacement pieces use a utility knife, and then glue it down. Here is where things change up. After waiting a few hours for the glue to dry, check to make sure it is secured in place. Use a pet brush or comb to blend the edges together. Take some hot water and a cloth. Dip the cloth into the hot water and rub the areas to help blend the two colors together.

How to Fix Cigarette Burn Holes in Carpet

Here’s a method for cigarette burns. Typically cigarette burns are much more mild burns and easier to deal with. First use sand paper and rub away the top of the burned surface. Then vacuum up the residue. If a few of the fibers were scorched deeper than the rest of the burned area, cut those pieces out, but not the whole spot like deeper burn marks we just talked about. Now there should be some mild discoloration. Create a cleaning solution of 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 10 parts water. Blot at the stain with a cloth. Make sure you start from the outside and work your way towards the center of the stain. Finally, rinse by blotting with straight water and then allow the area to dry.

There are many things you know that are on your carpets, and even mattresses for that matter. The basics; dust, dirt, hair, fur, dander, skin cells, pollen, and pollutants are fairly known. But what about the things that is not so commonly known to homeowners. Today, we at Carpet Care 2000 would like talk about the nasty germs and bacteria that lurk in the carpets and mattresses.

How Many Germs & Bacteria Are on Your Carpet?

The incredible research that has been done to find the extent of the germs that exists on the carpets you walk on and the mattresses you sleep on, is mind boggling. The studies prove that the carpets are a lot dirtier than you might suppose. Covering every square inch has approximately 200,000 bacteria, which makes it 4,000 times nastier than toilets. Mattresses are the places where you are the most vulnerable and exposed to bacteria and virus invasions, where many of them have evolved into aggressive and bacteria resistant strains.

What Common Germs & Bacteria Live in Your Carpet?

Below you will find a handful of the most health risk bacteria, viruses, and germs that are accumulating on your carpets and mattresses.
1) Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MSRA): Especially susceptible if you have any athletes in the house, this nasty germ is penicillin-resistant. Being introduced to your carpets or mattress from being transferred off of the gym bag, shoes, or other gear that came in contact with it on the dirty locker room floor, Methicillin or MRSA can be carried for hours or even years by seemingly healthy individuals. Red bumps that become more painful and larger over time, resulting in fevers and rashes are generally experienced and it only gets worse from there. If left untreated over a period of time, it can become untreatable, and eventually fatal.
2) Norovirus: Norovirus, or the Norwalk virus, causes symptoms similar to food poisoning or even the stomach flu. It becomes airborne as people walk or roll across it and can survive in your carpet or in your bed for 4 to 6 weeks.
3) Campylobacter: Most dangerous during the winter months, especially so when in bacteria-friendly dampness on galoshes come trekking inside, campylobacter causes a potentially deadly disease known as campylobacteriosis. This germ is exceptionally dangerous to people with a compromised immune system, particularly small children or the elderly. Bloody diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain and fever are the typical symptoms.
4) Micrococcus: For those with weaker immune systems, micrococcus can cause some serious skin infections, septic shock, meningitis, and other illnesses as well as death in severe cases.
5) Enterococci: Enterococci is a fairly normal bacteria that exists in your intestines, but some species can cause serious infections in humans. It can cause urinary tract infections, among other things, and can be caught from the carpet or mattress from a carrier.
6) Fungi and mold: Fungi and molds invade your home more frequently than you might realize. They can be the source of serious allergies and even death. Aspergillus, Rhizopus, Alternaria, Geotrichum and Cladosporium are a few examples of the different fungi and mold.

How to Clean Bacteria & Germs from Carpet

There are plenty of other germs, bacteria, and viruses that you can spread that have landed on your carpet. To minimize or even avoid many of them remember to vacuum regularly, keep your carpet dry, and have it professionally cleaned at least once per year, twice is more optimal. Keep up on regular maintenance on you mattress as well as annual cleanings and every 7-10 years replace the mattress.

If you have carpet in your home it means you’ll need to have it stretched at some point. When carpet stretching is performed, it involves pulling the carpet tighter and re-securing it to the tack strips that are located around the perimeter of the room. The tack strips are secured to the sub-floor. When carpet is installed professionally, it will be done securely and very tight against the strips initially. Over time the carpet will eventually need to be stretched.

Carpet Bubbling Up? What Causes Carpet to Wrinkle & Form Ripples?

Carpet needs to be stretched due to normal wear-and-tear in high-traffic areas and even areas that aren’t so busy. Daily activity will cause the carpet to pull away from the tack strips that are there to hold the carpet tight. When carpets are installed, there are almost always put together with seams. These seams can start to separate and pull away from each other. There are also times that the tack strips can become damaged or the carpet might just become stretched out and become less taut. When this happens to carpet, it loses its overall aesthetic appeal in the room and can also lead to safety concerns that come with loose carpet, like tripping.

Signs Your Carpet Needs to be Stretched

There are obvious signs and the ones trained professionals will notice. Does the carpet look wrinkled, rippled or lumpy? Your carpet should lay flat and smooth. Carpet that doesn’t lay flat and smooth can get snagged and damaged. It will also wear unevenly and cause your carpet to wear out faster. Has the carpet pulled away from the edges of the room? It should always be tucked in under the baseboards. Professionals can look for signs that the seams are starting to pull apart that are harder for you to see. The age of your carpet will determine when and how often you’ll need to have it done. If your carpet is showing any of these signs, you might need to have it stretched.

How to Stretch Carpet Using a Power Stretcher & Knee Kicker

Carpet should always be stretched by professionals. We can determine if it needs to be done at all. There’s more than one way to stretch carpet and we can determine which method is best and safest for your carpet. It might need one step or multiple steps. New tack strips might be needed or seams might just need to be repaired. There are times that extra carpet will need to be trimmed away and taking too much off can be disastrous. It needs to be done with more strength and energy than you might think. You will also need the right tools. Renting the tools might just cost more than having it done by professionals. The work needs to be done quickly and properly to get superior results and if it takes a professional a day to get it done think of how long it will take you?

Professional Carpet Stretching Services in Tracy, Livermore, San Ramon, Dublin, Ripon, Mountain House, Walnut Creek, Danville & the East Bay of California

Make sure you look for the signs that your carpet may need to be stretched. There are benefits to having it done, not to mention it will make your carpet last longer and save you money in the long run because you won’t need to replace it sooner than expected. Carpet stretching is not a DIY project. Contact Carpet Care 2000 if you think you carpet needs to be stretched.

When you are in an area that has the potential to flood, you need to know what to do. Your reaction to a flood can be what saves your belongings or what send them to the garbage. If you are in an area that doesn’t flood but you experience water damage you still need to have a plan. Water damage can come from an overflowed toilet, broken water heater or plumbing damage. Whatever the damage is from water is not a substance you want to let sit. A plan on what to do and why it is critical to act fast is necessary. There are many things that can easily go wrong and worse outcomes if you wait it out.

Carpet Care 2000 Lists Reasons You Want to Move Quickly After You Suffer From Water Damage

Water Contamination: When you are dealing with water damage of any kind the water has the potential to be contaminated. The contamination can be from many sources that include the sewer or just water from the environment. There are some levels of water damage that are clean enough to not be contaminated to the point of danger. If you have suffered a flood you need to act quickly on the clean up to try and control the possible contamination. This is done by getting to the damage as quickly as possible and removing as much of the damage as possible.
Water Will Cause Mold & Mildew to Grow on Carpet: You might think you have a few days to get the water cleaned up and you would be okay. The problem is that it only takes 24 hours for the growth of mold and mildew to occur. The best way to keep the growth of mold and mildew is to get all the water dried out in about a two day window. Mold and mildew not only have an odor that is unpleasant but it is also dangerous to live with. The spores from the mold will get in the air and that can easily cause breathing problems. The mold and mildew is not always visible and can be hidden under the carpet. You can’t assume you have time just because you can’t see it. The best way to do that is to use a professional company to extract the water right away. We can come out and use our truck mounted professional grade equipment for water extraction and structural fans to dry the carpet and remove any and all excess water.
Should Carpet Be Replaced After Water Damage?: Just because you have suffered water damage on your carpet does not mean you have to throw it out. It can be saved and left in the home to continue to be lived on. The only way for that to occur is to have the water damaged dried immediately. The longer you wait the less of a chance you have to save the carpet. This can be a costly mistake and you would need to have new carpet installed.

When you decide to do some rearranging in your living space you need to be ready for some heavy lifting. Most living and family rooms have couches, chairs, tables, bookshelves and rugs. These will all need to be picked up and moved out of the way. The carpets will take on some damage from having all of this heavy furniture on the carpet. There will be high traffic areas around the furniture as well as spills and stains on the carpet. When you decide to move the room around and rearrange it these areas can start to stick out like a sore thumb. The room may not look great with the carpet not looking even. There are also dents in the carpet from the weight of the furniture that is sitting on it. These are all problems and using a professional carpet cleaning can help to resolve these issues. There is another issue that can be plaguing your carpets and it is called phenolic yellowing.

Carpet Care 2000 Explains What Phenolic Yellowing Is & How To Treat It

What is Phenolic Yellowing & Off Gassing: When you have something laying on top of the carpeting you are prone to having this happen. You have to be sure that when you lift up the rug that you are not seeing a common occurrence. It can be the actual original color of the carpet under the rug because it was covered and safe from dirt and debris. The yellowing is exactly that. The phenolic yellowing is an occurrence that happens when the Butylhydroxytoluene in the carpet will have a reaction. The BHT is in carpeting and is okay when it can be released in the air in the room. When there is a large piece of furniture or a rug the BHT has nowhere to go so it will bounce off. This is what is referred to as off gassing. If you have a type of carpet that doesn’t have BHT in it it can come from the rug instead.
How to Stop Phenolic Yellowing of Textiles: You don’t want to allow a reaction such as phenolic yellowing to occur on your carpets. The best thing that you can do is to understand the carpet that you have. Then you want to move your heavy furniture items in your room around often. Change up the look of the room and give the carpet space to breath. The carpet needs to also be cleaned professionally. This will not only remove stains and clean the dirt but will give the carpet some breathing room. Don’t forget to remove all the furniture and rugs when you are having your carpets cleaned. You want to expose as much of the carpet as you can.
Can You Repair Phenolic Yellowing: The problem is that the phenolic yellowing is a chemical reaction that is occurring on your carpet. The problem is that it is a permanent issue and cannot be cleaned away. You need to do all you can prevent the problem so you don’t have to install new carpet prematurely.

Some people prefer to have carpets in those rooms where people like to lounge about. Many families will gather together and some will sprawl out all over the floor and couches. However, most may not realize what may be hiding within your carpets. Carpets that do not get cleaned regularly often build up dirt and other grime that can actually be affecting the health of everyone in the household. Most people assume vacuuming during their weekly cleaning is enough. Although this may help remove some of the dirt, not everything comes out of the carpet. Carpet Care 2000 will share how your carpet may be affecting your health and why you may want to consider having your carpets cleaned.

Can Old, Dirty Carpet Make You Sick?

Dust and dirt can seep deep into your carpets. So can dead human skin, which is also found in carpets. The combination of dirt and skin creates a feeding ground for dust mites. Dust mites can be found almost anywhere within your home. However, when it comes to carpet they pose a slightly bigger problem. Skin and dirt can become trapped where even a vacuum can’t get everything out. With an abundance of food, the number of dust mites will increase. With a huge pollution of dust mites, their own shed skin as well as their feces causes several types of respiratory problems. Additionally, dust and skin trapped in your carpet isn’t the only thing either. Often pet dander and even pests such as mice and cockroaches can also leave behind feces and flakes from shed skin. The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology published a study where asthmatic conditions in most children are triggered by indoor pollutants. One of the indoor pollutants is found in damp or dirty carpets which houses microbial growths that asthmatic children suffer from.

Carpet Health Risks; Germs & Organisms that Can Skin Conditions

Carpets that don’t get cleaned regularly have been discovered to hold millions of microorganisms. These organisms have been known to cause various types of skin related problems. One such example is athlete’s foot. For those who walk around barefoot on their carpet, which is a standard practice, their risk of picking up skin diseases increases. Especially those who may have sores, or cuts and scratches on the bottom of their feet. Many skin sensitivities irritations and fungus growth are often linked to filthy carpets.

How to Detect Mold Growth in Carpets

Carpets that are exposed to moisture are prone to developing mold, fungus and mildew under and inside the carpets. Even if water hasn’t been directly in contact with the carpet, moisture levels still can aid in mold growth. For example, carpets at the edge of bathroom doorways or from outside elements can provide enough moisture often enough to bloom mold within your carpets. Vacuuming carpets that have mold can actually create a bigger problem. Vacuuming the mold spores can make them airborne and now the spores are easily breathed in. These mold spores don’t just affect your breathing. They also can cause skin and internal problems leading to other health problems and poor immune systems.

Steam Carpet Cleaning in Tracy, Livermore, Sam Ramon, Dublin, Ripon, Mountain House, Walnut Creek, Danville & the East Bay of California

Carpet is a big investment and brings a lot of comfort into your home. When you have carpet installed, you want it to last as long as possible. But what happens when your carpet starts to wrinkle in some places? What causes this? Carpet Care 2000 is here to talk about some of the reasons you might notice your carpet starts to wrinkle and how it can be solved.

Humidity is a Big Cause in Carpet Wrinkling

Who knew that humidity would be a leading cause of carpet wrinkling? Well, it is. Places that get the chance to enjoy four seasons are the homes that are most susceptible to the problem. When there are such extreme changes in the weather, it can cause wrinkling in your carpet. If the air has added moisture in it, that same moisture penetrates the fibers of your carpet and cause swelling. If the problem isn’t a large one, you may notice that the carpet lays down flat again once moisture levels in the air regulate again. The use of a dehumidifier in the home can also help fix this problem.

Improper Installation Causes Carpet Bulging

When you have carpet installed in your home, the carpet needs to be properly stretched during the installation process. Also, when you purchase the carpet far from home, in a different climate than where you live, it is beneficial to allow the carpet to acclimate to your environment before installation. That way, when the carpet is stretched, it won’t likely loosen as much as if it were installed right away.

Dragging Heavy Items Damages Your Carpet

If you need to move heavy items around your house, it is important to avoid dragging them across the carpet. Not only can this cause your carpet to wrinkle, but you can also experience snagging. The best way to move heavy objects around your house is with the use of plywood. Place the object on the plywood and slowly move it across the floor. Of course, the best option is to have enough manpower to lift the object off the floor completely and move it, but this isn’t always realistic.

The Process of Delamination Causes Rippling

There are two types of backing that make up the back of your carpet. The primary backing and the secondary backing. Over time, these two can separate and cause problems like wrinkling. The latex adhesive that bonds them together can start to break down. Another cause of delamination can be a manufacturer’s defect. If your carpet has experienced any water damage, it can also cause the two backings to separate.

Use the Right Carpet Padding

When you are choosing the carpet pad before your carpet is installed, it is important to choose the right one for the carpet you have chosen. If your carpet pad isn’t dense enough, it can’t support the carpet like it needs to and there will be flexibility where there otherwise shouldn’t be. This can cause wrinkling in your carpet.
