One of the most important accessories of your home is the carpet. Carpets can amplify the overall style of the room, or even, bring it down. At some point, the carpet will eventually be victimized by spilled substances. There are so many variables that can cause carpet staining, including household chemicals and products, grass, food or beverages, pets, daily use, and other such blemishes that can potentially ruin the carpet’s presentation. When it comes to treating these stains, there are simply some elements that should be avoided to ensure the carpet is restored. With that in mind, we at Carpet Care 2000 would like to share the don’ts of cleaning spills on the carpets.

Using Too Much Soap & Other Don’ts of Carpet Cleaning

1) Carpet Fiber Type. It is important to know what type of fibers your carpet is manufactured from. Different fibers can have poor reactions to certain chemicals. To avoid potentially damaging the carpet, try to find out what the carpet is made of if you do not already know before treating spots or stains.
2) Never Treat Carpet Stains with Hot Water. Hot water or implements, much like drying stained clothes in the dryer, will cause the stain to set in too often. There are a few exceptions to this rule, for instance, to remove wax you hold a hot iron a hot iron over paper to draw the wax out. Though in rare instances heat can be useful, generally cold or lukewarm water is all that is required to treat spills.
3) Spot Clean Test Carpet First. The patch test should never be skipped and too many forego it. Whether you have a favorite homemade remedy, or a commercial carpet cleaner, or if you have used it countless times or if it is your first time, the patch test should always be done. As mentioned some fibers are not cohesive with certain chemicals, commercial products can also be reformulated without your knowledge making the patch test mandatory to ensure the fibers’ color or integrity is not compromised.
4) Blot Carpet Stains. Scrubbing and rubbing techniques need to be avoided. Natural impulse for most people is to scrub out messes from the carpets. No matte if it is instinct, or emotion, this impulse needs to be avoided. By rubbing and scrubbing, all you do is spread the substance out and push it deeper in the fibers. Use moderate pressure to blot the mess throughout the process. Start on the outer perimeter and work your way towards the center to netter contain the mess.
5) Never Let a Carpet Spill Sit. It is crucial that messes, in most cases, get treated immediately. Allowing them to linger makes a stain, making it harder to remove.
6) Use Clean White Cloths. Avoid implements that are printed or dyed. Paper towels, rags, cloths, and towels that feature dyed coloring or printed messages or icons can potentially be transferred onto the carpet during the treatment. Instead, simply use plain white implements to avoid creating another problem on your carpets.

When your family wants to cuddle up and watch a movie together your couch instantly becomes a hot commodity. Kids and parents alike will enjoy getting nice and relaxed on your couch to enjoy some down time and make some memories with your family. You probably pop some popcorn and have a soda too. While the memories that can be made from these priceless times you have on your couch are fantastic, the stains that can come from the treats and drinks can be frustrating. Carpet Care 2000 has some basic tips that you can use to get your couch looking nice and clean.

Vacuum Sofa Upholstery

The first thing you will want to do is get your vacuum out and start cleaning. Frequently the attachments that come with your vacuum do not get much use. When you clean your couch those little attachments are definitely going to come in handy! If you have a hand vacuum it may be an excellent choice for this project. You will want to see if the cushions on your couch come off or not. If the cushions come off you will want to remove them and vacuum all of the sides of each cushion. You will also want to vacuum the base of the couch before replacing the cushions. If your cushions are attached to your couch you will want to make sure that you vacuum all of the crevices as much as possible.

Clean Other Areas of Couch

After you have vacuumed your couch you will want to clean any other surface that may be on your couch. Some couches have wood or metal decorative pieces on them that will need to be cleaned. Wood pieces will need to be dusted. Metal pieces can be cleaned with warm, soapy water.

How to Remove Water & Other Stains from a Couch

Getting stains off of your couch will be your next project. Removing stains from your couch can be hard work. You will want to make sure that you use the appropriate cleaning supplies for your couch. Fabric, leather, and synthetic upholstery all need to be cleaned differently. You can look on the couch cushions for what type of cleaning supplies the couch manufacturer recommends. There are also tons of different tips that you can find online that may help you out. A popular cleaner recipe for fabric upholstery is ¼ cup vinegar, ¾ cup of warm water, and 1 tablespoon dish soap. Mix those ingredients together and spray them on and get scrubbing! Synthetic upholstery may benefit from ½ cup vinegar, 1 cup of warm water, and ½ tablespoon of liquid soap to get those tough stains out. Combining ½ cup olive oil and ¼ cups vinegar can help clean a leather couch. Once you have removed the stains from your sofa you will want to let it dry from any cleaning supplies that you may have used on it before letting your family sit back on it.

So many offices have carpet as the flooring. It’s good at reducing noise and provides good insulation. It also creates a warmer, more inviting atmosphere for your customers and employees. Carpet is cheaper than other flooring options, but it does need more maintenance to make sure it lasts a long time. Carpets in offices are designed for high traffic and heavy use. Even though it’s a cheaper option for flooring, you still made an investment in it should take care of it. Every office should have carpet cleaning worked into the general maintenance, but most business owners don’t have this needed service on the top of their to do list and simply continue to put it off.

Signs Your Carpet Needs Professional Cleaning

1. Stubborn carpet stains. With all the traffic that goes on in an office, spots and stains are inevitable. If those spots and stains start to stick out like a sore thumb, it makes the whole office look dingy. This is a good indication that it’s time to schedule carpet cleaning.
2. “New carpet” look is gone. There’s nothing like brand new carpet. You can keep it looking that way when you have it cleaned on a regular basis. You’ll fall in love with it all over again!
3. Hard maintenance. Carpet that is professionally cleaned makes it easier for the janitorial staff to keep it that way between cleanings. Years of dust and debris can take a toll on your carpets, making it harder to keep clean. When spots and stains are removed on a regular basis, it prevents them from getting worse and taking more time and effort to remove.
4. Allergy issues. Carpets are notorious for trapping dust, pollen and other particles that float in the air. This can lead to runny noses, watery eyes and itchy throats. If you notice your employees suffering from these symptoms, chances are it’s due to allergies. Have the carpets cleaned to eliminate these contaminants.
A clean office is a more productive office and you might think there isn’t a correlation between the two. But employees work better in a clean environment because they are happier and get sick less often. Less sick days mean more work gets done.

How Often Do You Need Professional Commercial Carpet Cleaning?

The type of carpet you have, color and the foot traffic it gets will all determine how often it needs to be cleaned. The company you hire will assess your carpets and let you know how often they should be cleaned. How often may also depend on how much you’re willing to spend and the services you want. Different services include shampooing, steam cleaning, protection and/or vacuuming.

Having kids and pets in your home means your upholstery has seen better days. If you want your upholstery to look good, you need to take care of it, and vacuuming from time to time isn’t enough.

Upholstery Should Be Cleaned as Soon as You Bring it Home

This may seem sort of strange, but it really is a good idea to thoroughly clean your furniture when you bring it home. This will prevent possible allergic reactions that can occur with the out-gassing process that furniture goes through. New furniture can also have an unpleasant chemical smell. Any discomfort can be minimized during the first few weeks you have your new furniture if you clean it when it’s delivered to your home.

Don’t Let Liquids Sit and Soak into Upholstery

Anytime your furniture experiences a spill, it needs to be taken care of right away. Whether it’s red wine or a pet accident, the longer a spill sits on your furniture, the harder it will be to remove. It can penetrate to the upholstery stuffing, spread and become almost impossible to neutralize any odors. You may even need to replace the stuffing if you can’t get rid of the smell. Getting to a stain right away will give you the best chance of success to remove a stain.

Some Fabric Sofa Materials Needs Specific Cleaning Methods

Upholstery can be made with many materials. You will need to know what kind of fabric your upholstery is made of before you start any cleaning, otherwise you can damage it. Proper cleaning agents and effective methods will need to be used. You will need to be even more careful with natural materials like leather, that may need care after cleaning to replenish the oils in the material. All furniture has a tag on it that will let you know how to clean it:
• WS: Use a mild detergent with a steam vacuum or a dry-cleaning detergent.
• S: Use a dry cleaner detergent only.
• X: Use a vacuum only. No water.
• W: Use water to clean it.

Baking Soda Absorbs & Removes Odors from Couches

There is one ingredient that you probably have in your home that’s all you might need to clean your upholstery- it’s baking soda. It’s the ingredient that will get your upholstery looking and smelling great again. It’s great at neutralizing smells and it’s a powerful, natural cleaner. Why is it so powerful? This product reacts with foul-smelling acidic scents. Unlike fabric sprays or air fresheners, baking soda actually absorbs smells, rather than masking them. Even though it’s a powder, baking soda has abrasive qualities. It’s gentle, but slightly gritty and works to exfoliate stains by lifting dirt and debris. It’s also a great at getting deep down into your upholstery. First, you’ll need to remove stubborn marks or stains with diluted dish soap and a clean cloth or sponge. Blot and allow it to dry. Vacuum the upholstery with the brush attachment and sprinkle the baking soda. Let it sit for 30 minutes and then vacuum one more time until you no longer see any of the baking soda.

When flooding occurs inside your home it can become a major expense to repair and replace the damaged areas. Many will choose to restore their home’s carpet after a flooding to help save money. However, due to the nature of carpet, it can be very difficult to restore after a flooding. Carpet Care 2000 will share how to preserve carpet after a flood and prevent mold from developing in your carpets.

Water Damage Can Lead to Harmful Mold Exposure

One of the major issues when carpet gets flooded is mold development. Mold can begin to develop very quickly and depending on what contaminates and conditions are present, some of the worst types of mold can develop leading to some major health problems. One of the biggest challenges and the focus on restoring carpet after a flooding is to prevent mold. In order to salvage your carpets you must prevent mold from developing. After a flooding follow these steps to drying, cleaning and treating the carpet to prevent mold growth.

Water Damage Restoration Process

Step 1. Depending on how severe the flood or water exposure to the carpet you will know if it is a DIY job or one for the professional. If the flooding has been severe, it is recommended that you have a professional come and restore the carpet. They will have the equipment to pump the water out of the carpet and dry more efficiently. In minor situations you can use a shop vacuum to suck the water out of the carpet. You will want to remove as much water out of the carpet as you can, so be thorough when sucking water out.
Step 2. Open all of the doors and windows to provide plenty of air circulation. Also turn on all the lights in your home. The light can prevent mold growth. Turn on all ceiling fans, or portable fans, and begin drying the carpet. It is also recommended that you use a dehumidifier to help remove more water and even the moisture in the air. You may need to leave the fan, lights and dehumidifier running all night long or until the carpet and the padding is completely dry.
Step 3. Once the carpet feels mostly dry, generously sprinkle baking soda on top of the carpet. This can help remove more of the moisture in the carpet. While the baking soda is absorbing the moisture it is also removing the odor at the same time. Keep the fan, dehumidifier and lights on for another 24 hours to ensure the carpet is completely dry. Attempt during this drying process to keep foot traffic to a minimal.
Step 4. Treat the carpet by cleaning the carpet. You can use a professional or rent an industrial carpet cleaning machine. You will want to get a cleaning solution capable of killing mold and other fungus or bacteria. There are many types of carpet mold removers you can use. Make sure to be thorough when cleaning your carpets.

They are also a really great way to add some comfort to certain areas of the house. If you have hard flooring in your home you still might want to be able to lay down or walk on cushion. This is where an area rug comes into play and can add exactly what you would need. The problem that some people have with their area rug is how to take care of them. They don’t know what to do about keeping them clean so that they continue to look good and last.

Carpet Care 2000 Outlines Area Rug Cleaning Tips

Get the Ground in Dirt Out Of the Rug: The first tip that you want to make sure you use is to keep the dirt off the rug. The rug is in a room and you will be walking over the top of it leaving dirt and debris deposits. You want to make sure that you use your vacuum on a regular basis. The vacuum is a great way to get the dirt off the top of the rug. The rug will be full of dirt and if you let the dirt stay it can start to damage the rug. It will also stamp down the rug making it less comfortable. The vacuum is only going to get the dirt that is on the surface so there is more that needs to be done.
Avoid Sun Damage to Area Rugs: Another problem that you might have when you use an area rug in your house is with the sun. The rug is placed in a particular location and left there. The problem is that if the rug in in the path of a window that is allowing hours of sunlight it can cause damage to the rug. The sun will start to bleach out the colors on the rug just in the spot that the sun is hitting. That will leave it looking uneven and not the beautiful addition you bought it for. You want to try and avoid the direct sunlight or close the blinds when the sun is peaking through.
Rotate Area Rugs: You also want to make sure that you rotate the rug. You want to give it the best chance to wear out at the same rate. If you allow the rug to sit in the same location it will wear out faster in specific areas. This can be where you walk the most while the rest is left under a table. Be sure to rotate the rug in a regular basis to even out the wear and tear.

Carpet Care 2000 Offers Tips for How to Keep Carpets Clean Until Your Next Professional Cleaning Visit

Start with Professional Carpet Cleaning: When you are looking at the best ways to keep your carpets looking clean then you need to start at the beginning. This means that you need to start with a good an reputable company that has the ability to clean the carpets properly. You also want to make sure that once the carpets have been cleaned you are careful with what you do next. After the cleaning company has left it is best to wait to be sure that the carpets are fully dry before you do anything. If they have any damp spots at all it is best to wait before you place furniture or walk on them. You want to make sure that you have time to allow them to dry after the cleaning is done.
Enforce No Shoes on the Carpet & in the House: There are homes that are very strict on having shoes on in the house while others may be more lenient. The shoes that you wear outside the house are full of dirt, debris and material that can be dropped onto your carpets when you walk in the house with them. If you want a better chance for your carpets to look clean then you need to make sure that you keep the shoes off. You can use a sign, containers and benches to make it easier to get people to abide by the rule. While shoes are bad it seems that bare feet are just as bad. Your skin carries oils that are damaging to your carpets if it is allowed to build up. Wearing house shoes or socks are the best options.

You want to make sure that you know the best methods to clean certain stains and make sure that you clean right away. You’ve taken time and effort to clean your carpets, put everything away neatly only to discover that the carpet still smells. The musty, sour, or wet dog smell will leave you disappointed. How can it possibly smell worse after it’s been cleaned? This is a common complaint that comes with reasons and solutions.

Carpet Smells like Mildew

The most common reason that carpets still smell after they have been cleaned is that the backing or padding underneath the carpet has not dried completely. This will lead to mildew or a sour smell. The smell will linger until the backing and/or padding has dried completely. There is no easy way to dry the padding, it will just take time. There are steps you can take to prevent mildew from forming. You can clean the carpet again with a solution of white vinegar and water. This is an effective way to kill mildew and absorb odors. You can also open windows of use fans to expedite the drying process and space heaters can be used to soak up humidity.

Carpet Smells like Wet Dog

The common reason that carpets may smell like a wet dog is most likely the carpet padding again, but mildew is not the culprit. It’s more likely the stains that were present before you cleaned it. Food spills, animal urine and other kinds of spills get soaked into the padding and can be hard to remove. The cleaning process will reactivate the leftover particles and cause them to smell again. It’s normal to smell these odors for a day, no longer. If these smells linger after about two days, it needs to dry faster. You can use a germicide or odor neutralizing cleaner, but getting the carpet wet again will make the smell more prominent. The padding needs to be dried completely to eliminate bad smells.

How to Get Rid of Carpet Odors

There are other ways you can eliminate odors as the carpet dries. You can put bowls of vinegar in the room for a few days. You can also sprinkle some baking soda over the carpet while it dries. Once the carpet is dry simply vacuum it up. Kitty litter is a great way to deodorize the room. Place some litter in a bowl or two and put them in the room. It will work like the vinegar at eliminating odors, just keep the cat away or you might have another problem on your hands! Borax can help reduce odor because it kills mold. Sprinkle it over the carpet and use a broom to rub it in. Allow it to sit overnight and vacuum in the morning.

Drying Carpet After Water Damage

If carpets still smell after a water damage cleanup, it’s probably due to mold or mildew underneath the carpet. This is serious and can be harmful to your health. Mold can be killed, but you will need professional mold remediation to have your carpets cleaned thoroughly. Carpet and padding may need to be removed completely to ensure safety. You should never ignore carpet smells after water damage.

Spills do happen, especially when you have clumsy tendencies. Though you do everything you can to keep the carpets vibrant and plush, unsightly blemishes still occur. A very common spill is milk; as it is a popular drink or ingredient, such as for cereal and other foods, among adults and children alike. Because of the frequent use of milk, it is a highly likely people will experience this mess on their carpets. Despite it not being dark, like say red wine, it can still develop a stain if not properly treated, and worse, odors can form quite quickly. In most instances, if you treat the spill quickly with household ingredients, you can easily remove the milk and any potential stains and odors.
