When it comes to the preservation of your carpets, vacuuming is a primary maintenance step. You simply cannot vacuum enough, and contrary to belief, vacuuming will not damage carpets. Treating spills right away is vital to keep carpets looking their best. When people tackle the stains and spots, many homeowners attack the blemishes and end up making the stain problem worse and even causing irreversible damage. Today, we at Carpet Care 2000 would like to take the opportunity to share the big no nos of carpet cleaning.

1) Don’t Use Hot Water when Treating Carpet Stains

Using hot water is required in very few circumstances. Much like washing clothes in hot water, the stain will set into the carpet fibers and depending on the substance, the stain can become a permanent blemish. When treating stains, never use water that is hotter than lukewarm and if you are ever in doubt, be sure to use cool water straight from the tap to avoid causing catastrophe. Never over saturate. The carpet should never get over-wet as it can lead to sub-floor and carpet damage as well potential mold-growth.

2) Avoid Using Printed or Dyed Rags to Clean Stains

Many people tend to use rags to teat carpet stains in addition to paper towels. The problem with not using solid white only cloths, rags, paper towels, and towels, is that the prints and dyes can inadvertently be transferred onto the carpet while trying to remove the stain, leaving you with an extra mess. Stick to only using white paraphernalia.

3) Letting the Spill Sit on Carpet is a Mistake

The longer any spill is left to linger, the harder it is to remove. Not only can the stains become a challenge to lift out, but the odors can still develop the longer the substance sits. When a spill makes contact with the carpet, it is best to immediately start treating it.

4) Don’t Scrub Carpet Stains

Scrubbing and/or rubbing the substance only spread the spot out wider and pushes it deeper into the fibers. When you treat the spill, throughout the whole process, you need to blot. Use moderate pressure to press and pat the spill, letting the substance absorb into the paper towel or rag. For better containment, be sure to blot on the outer ridge and work your way towards the center.

5) Avoid Skipping the Patch Test

Many homeowners presume the carpet stain removing product is safe, or that their favorite homemade solution is familiar enough to use. Getting too comfortable with cleaning removers means that you can potentially ruin your carpets by lightening the colors, or other fiber damage. Every time you use a cleaner to treat spots and stains on the carpets, always perform a patch test in an inconspicuous location to ensure there is not a negative impact.

6) Not Rinsing & Drying Carpet Spots is a Mistake

After the spots have been treated, many people feel victorious with their efforts and walk away. However, it is essential you use a water only dampen cloth to rinse away the cleaner from the surface using the blotting technique. Many lingering cleaning residues can cause issues within a few days, leaving you with another spot to treat. After the surface is rinsed, dry the area as best as possible. Place a towel over the top and weight it down over night if necessary, to absorb the residual moisture.

Have you ever looked over and realized that the pen you were using is leaking ink all over your hand or even your face? You need to use a pen to write your list of errands, do some homework or leave a note. The pen is something that you use often and with school fast approaching you want to know what to do if the ink leaks out and gets all over your carpet. Maybe you have a child that is working on a project and their pen breaks. The ink is a stain that can be hard to treat because it is essentially a dye that is intended to stain the material it is used on. The ink in a ballpoint pen can be many different colors and if you have ever tried to wipe it away it seems to spread out all over the place. You want to make sure you know what to do to clean it off without making a bigger mess. Carpet Care 2000 outlines what you can do to get ink out of your carpet.

How to Remove Ink with Hairspray

If you notice that someone has gotten ink on the carpet and it is from a standard pen you want to use the hairspray method. This may seem odd to use a bottle of hairspray but it is a great way to break up the ink and allow you the opportunity to remove it. You want to buy a bottle of lacquer hairspray that usually is in an aerosol can. This is the main ingredient to cleaning the ink. You can use the bottle to spray over the ink stained area. You want to give it a good spray and you should see the stain starting to lift. Then you need to use a cloth to dab at the spot so that you can remove the ink that is lifting. Once you have removed the stain you can wash the area with water and a small amount of dish detergent. This will clean the residue that is left from cleaning the ink. This method will work best when you address the ink stain right away.

Use Rubbing Alcohol to Get Ink Out of Carpet

If you have an ink stain that is from a permanent ink source you may need to start with a different method. If you have someone that has gotten the ink from a marker that is meant to permanent you want to also act fast. The first thing you need to do is to grab some rubbing alcohol and a wash cloth. IN this method you want to add the rubbing alcohol to the cloth and gently dab at the spot. The dabbing will help to keep the ink in one spot as it transfers to the rag you are using. You can repeat the process a few times if needed. Once you have that done you can follow up with the hairspray method to treat any remaining stains.

That is why using some of the tips and tricks that are known to work can help. Carpet Care 2000 offers tips and tricks to keep your carpets clean.

Proper Carpet Vacuum

We all know that your carpets are a magnet for the dirt and dust that is brought in the house. It can be what is floating in the air or it can be what you bring in on your shoes and clothes. The dirt will have an impact on the carpet because it acts as an abrasive and will start to fray the carpet. That is why the tip is to make sure that you use the vacuum on the carpet on a regular basis. The vacuum is a great way to reduce the amount of dirt that is being left on the carpets. The problem with the tip is that you need to make sure that you have the right vacuum. You need to have one that is in good working condition as well as kept clean and filters washed. You also don’t want to skimp on the vacuum that you buy and be sure that you get one that is top of the line.

Neutralize Carpet Odors

A tip that you also should use is one that will help you to reduce any odors that might be lingering on the carpets. The carpet is also like a sponge and when there is smelly gym bag left on it overnight the odor can start to linger. This also happens with food, spills and even everyday use. You want to make sure that you reduce the odor by using baking soda. The baking soda can be sprinkled over the carpeted area and left to sit overnight or at least a few hours. Then you want to follow up with running the vacuum. The vacuum will pull up the baking soda and the baking soda will have soaked up the odors. This will help to keep your house smelling its best.

Control Sunlight on Carpet

You may not realize it but the sunlight that most people crave to be in the house can be causing damage. The sunlight is great to bring in some light and vibrancy to any home but if you are allowing the sunlight to blast on the carpet it can cause it to start to fade. Once the carpet is staring to fade it cannot be reversed. You will need to potentially be replaced. It is better to make sure that your blinds are only open when the sun is not landing on your carpet.

Carpet will develop wrinkles, ripples and bumps in the carpet over time. These bumps or ripples can occur from using too much heat during carpet cleaning or from dragging heavy furniture across the carpets. When these bumps occur, the carpet can be repaired with carpet stretching services. Carpet Care 2000 would like to share more about the basics of carpet stretching and how it can help repair those bumpy carpets.

Stretching to Get Wrinkles Out of Carpet

It is common to need the carpet stretched back in place about every three to five years. Carpet wrinkles don’t just reduce the appearance of the carpet, it can also cause a tripping hazard and lead to premature wear in the carpets. Carpet wrinkles make it more difficult to properly maintain and clean carpets too. When carpet becomes stretched out, the carpet can be repaired. Carpet stretching is when the carpet is reinstalled tighter and once again lays flat.

How to Stretch Carpet

When carpets are repaired, the end where the bubble or rippling is occurring is typically the side that is stretched. Professional carpet stretching repair uses a carpet tool that has long sharp teeth to sink into the carpet. On the opposite end, the carpet is pushed toward the wall, tightening the carpet. The loose ends will have a few inches of carpet that need to be cut and removed. Once the excess carpet is cut off the edges, the carpet is re-anchored down on the carpet tack strips. When properly secured, the carpet should hold in-place and lay flat once again.

DIY VS Professional Carpet Stretching

There are not a lot of steps to carpet stretching. However, it is recommended that it be done by a professional. Proper carpet stretching is essential for best results. Additionally, a professional will make sure the ripples don’t develop prematurely in the future. It is also essential the carpet is secured in place correctly. Often the carpet will rip away from the edges if it is not properly installed back down.

How to Prevent Carpet Ripples

Once the carpet has been repaired, the homeowner often asks “how do I prevent ripples from happening in the future again?” Carpets will shrink when exposed to temperatures over 250 degrees. At times improper carpet cleaning can cause the carpet to be exposed to too much heat. Avoid using too much heat when cleaning carpet. Another major culprit is dragging heavy furniture over the carpet. Make sure when moving heavy furniture that you have the item picked up and carried. Avoid direct contact with the carpet to prevent stretching and damaging the carpet. There is another major culprit that can shrink and stretch out the carpets, and that is humidity. Humidity can cause the carpet to expand and contract. When combined with foot traffic, it will lead to carpet rippling. To help prevent humidity’s effects on your carpet, consider installing a dehumidifier in your home to control the humidity level within.

We all know what it feels like to have sand in between our toes. The way it feels as we scrunch our toes together. Dirt in your carpet will do the same thing to the fibers of your carpet when we walk on it. This damages it and breaks the fibers down. When carpets are dirty, they don’t last as long as they are designed to. Did you know that you should have your carpets professionally cleaned every six months? You may even have it do it more often than that depending on whether or not you have children and/or pets or if it receives a lot of foot traffic. It’s important to vacuum on a regular basis because dirt can actually scratch carpet fibers. Dirt and oils will then stick to these scratches and become harder to remove with your vacuum cleaner, leaving it looking dirty. The longer you go in-between vacuuming the more damage there will be and you may be left with traffic lanes and permanent soiling. You may find yourself spending money to replace your carpet sooner than you thought.

Is Carpet Cleaning Only to Remove Dirt?

Wrong. There are many pollutants that end up in and on your carpets. Pollen, bacteria, fungus, cigarette smoke to name a few. Your family and friends track them into your home every time they enter. Think about how often you clean your kitchen floor. Doesn’t your carpet deserve to be cleaned at least twice a year? Clean your carpets for hygienic reasons not just because it looks dirty. Carpet cleaning is also done to remove allergens. Carpeting acts like a giant filter, trapping allergens so you’re not breathing them in. When that giant filter becomes full it can no longer do that and you’ll be breathing in dust, pollen, fungus, spores and other gross stuff.

Is Dry Carpet Cleaning as Good as Steam Cleaning?

Wrong. Dry cleaning methods are great for in between cleanings, but they will not rinse your carpet in any way. That means you’ll have soil left behind to attract more dirt and your carpet will feel half clean. The best way to have your carpets cleaned is with the hot water extraction method- that means a hot water solution, under high pressure. The most effective hot water extraction cleaning comes with truck-mounted equipment. Water is heated to higher temperatures that will break up dirt, bacteria, pollen and other chemicals in your carpet. The machine will then use a powerful suction to draw all the dirt and chemicals out of the carpet.

Is the Right Cleaning Equipment All it Takes to Clean Carpets Properly?

Wrong. A company can have the best equipment in the world but if the technician isn’t trained properly your carpets will not be cleaned in the best way possible. Along with the right equipment comes the right solutions. Hire professionals to ensure the best and most effective products are used on your carpets.

The flooring in your house is something that of course gets a lot of attention. They don’t always get good attention and can be the target of unwanted dirt, debris and stains. Every drop of liquid and tipped over plate of food can be on the floor and cause some problems. You want to make sure you keep your floors clean and there are a few ways to do that. If you have carpets you know you have to keep them vacuumed. When you run your vacuum you are removing the dirt and debris that is standing around the top of the carpet. The deep and hard to treat stains are something that has to be done by a professional carpet cleaner. They are coming in with professional equipment that works to get the stains and the hard to reach dirt out of your carpet leaving them clean and comfortable. Some people don’t know why professional carpet cleaning is necessary and don’t know how it works. Carpet Care 2000 outlines how steam carpet cleaning works.

How Does Steam Cleaning Work?

There are some cleaning techniques that are recommended by carpet manufacturers to keep the carpets not only clean but also looking their best. The top rated way to clean carpets is to use steam cleaning. The professional service has equipment that uses water that is turned to vapor and then heated. The hot steam is what is placed on your carpets with a specialty tool. This steam is what will cause the dirt, stains and grime to be released from your carpet fibers so that they can be removed. Then the machine will use a dry steam to go back over the area and remove the moisture that may have been used. While it is being removed the dirt and staining will come with it.

Steam Cleaning Has No Harsh Chemicals

One of the things that has made a change in the carpet cleaning profession is that they realized that the chemicals that are sometimes used can be damaging the carpet. Over time the chemicals can cause damage and wear them out sooner. The great thing about steam cleaning is that there are no harsh cleaners that are used in the process. This is also a great way to not leave any residue behind on the carpet. That means that you will have the nice soft smooth carpet fibers.

Steam Carpet Cleaning Kills Germs & Bacteria

One of the things that you may not know about your carpets is that they can carry bacteria and germs as well as mites and other pests. These things can cause people to get sick and if you want to keep your house well it is a good idea to reduce the germs and bacteria. The way that you can do that is with steam cleaning. The steam is at a temperature that is hot enough to kill off any bacteria and germs that might be running ramped through your house.

Children and adults alike enjoy cold glasses of milk in their flavorful varieties. Chocolate and strawberry milk options are very commonly served to the little ones at mealtime or even throughout the day. Where this cool refreshing drink has its benefits, it can be challenging to remove from carpets. Today, we at Carpet Care 2000 would like to share how to remove chocolate and strawberry milk spots from the carpet.

Spilled Milk on Carpet Removal

1) Absorb as much of the excess milk as possible by using a few paper towels. Place them on top of the spill and gently apply pressure and blot up the moisture. Soak up the mess until it no longer saturates the paper towels; toss them as you go.
2) Use a small dose of table salt to sprinkle the surface of the spill to prevent the chocolate or strawberry milk from spreading and absorbing into the fibers. Let the salt remain for about 20 minutes to absorb the moisture and use the vacuum to remove the remnants.
3) In a container, combine 1 tbsp. dish washing liquid with 2 cups warm water. Use a dampen cloth treated with the solution and blot the remaining stain out of the carpet. Be sure to work the outer rim of the spot and work towards the center to better contain the stain from spreading. Another option that works optimally on strawberry milk include using a teaspoon of non-bleach laundry detergent with five cups of warm water, or other commercial carpet stain removers. If you choose to use a commercial cleaner, be sure to follow the instructions on the label.
4) Be sure to follow up with a dampen cloth of pure water to remove any residual solution residues from the carpet. Use a clean towel to blot out the remaining moisture.
5) If the stain persists, mix together 1 Tbsp ammonia into 2 cups warm water, and dampen the mixture onto the sponge and blot out the remaining milk. As before, use a damp cloth of water only to blot out the diluted ammonia thoroughly.
6) Use a dry towel to remove the remaining moisture as much as possible.
Note: When treating the chocolate or strawberry milk stain, be sure to conduct a patch test in an inconspicuous spot to ensure it will not compromise the carpet. Follow up the sprinkling the baking soda the area to neutralize any developing odors. After the baking soda has sat several hours, overnight is optimal, vacuum the remnants when the area is assuredly dry. Never use hot water when treating the milk stain, and only use paper towels, sponges, cloths, towels, and other paraphernalia to treat the area to avoid making the stain worse. When ever possible, especially when it comes to milk, immediately treat the spill to avoid bacteria growth, odors, and more challenging stains from occurring.
