With our current stay at home situation taking place, it has many of us looking around our house at things that we would like to change. One thing you may decide your home needs is a nice area rug to finish off a space. The right area rug can pull all the design features of a room together and add true character to the space when you pick the right one. Carpet Care 2000 is here to share some tips to keep in mind when you are on the quest for the perfect area rug for your home.

Choosing the Right Size

Choosing the right sized area rug for your space is key in it looking right. Here are some tips to keep in mind.
– Bigger Area Rug is Better: If you have the option to choose a smaller rug or a larger one, always remember that bigger is better. You don’t want the rug to look undersized for the space. It will be worth the money to choose the larger rug every time.
– Area Rug Location: Every room is going to be different. There are many different shapes to choose from. Look at the room you are choosing the rug for and that will help you determine not only the size but the shape.
– Visualize Area Rug in the Room: You need to be able to visualize the final look of the space. Look at the room from different vantage points to determine what sized rug will look best.

Rug Sizes Chart by Room

Like mentioned above, every room is different when it comes to what sized rug will look best. Here is a breakdown of different rooms found in homes and what rugs usually look best in them.
– Living Room Area Rug: There are a couple rules to follow in the living room for the right sized rug. You can choose a rug large enough that all the legs of the furniture in the room are resting on the rug, or some people decide to get a rug big enough for only the front legs of the furniture to rest on it. If you don’t want any of the legs on the rug, you need to make sure that the rug extends at least 6 inches on either side of the furniture so the rug doesn’t look too small.
– Dining Room Area Rug: The shape of your room and your table will determine the right shape of the rug, but you want the front legs of your chair to rest on the rug when they are pulled out with someone sitting in them.
– Bedroom Area Rug: At least 2/3 of your bed should rest on the rug you choose for your bedroom. If you don’t like the thought of such a large rug, you can always choose two runners that are on either side of the bed as well.

One of the most difficult stains to remove from carpet is the regrettable coffee stain. Coffee is well known to be a major staining substance that often leaves a permanent blemish on your carpets. When carpets develop coffee stains, many homeowners fear they will be stuck with the stain forever. However, there are some ways to remove coffee stains. If you accidentally spill coffee on your carpets, Carpet Care 2000 will share how you can remove the coffee stain or where to find professional help.

Are Coffee Stains on Carpet or Upholstery Permanent?

Many people hear how coffee stains are permanent, but this isn’t completely true. Using the right methods and by taking the right steps, coffee stains can be removed from the carpets. When spills occur it is important to react quickly. The fresher the stain is, the easier it will be to remove.

How to Remove Coffee Spills from Carpet or Couch

Once a coffee spill has happened, quickly grab a cloth, and begin blotting at the spill. Use the cloth to absorb as much of the coffee as possible. Never rub at the stain. You will want to gently blot up the liquid from the coffee spill. After blotting at the coffee, pour cold water to dilute the coffee some more. Blot at the water and help remove more of the coffee in the carpet. After blotting at the spill, next you will want to apply a stain remover. If you don’t have a carpet stain remover on hand, you can make your own. Mix one tablespoon of liquid dish soap with one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of warm water. With a clean cloth, dip it into the cleaning mixture and blot at the stain. To prevent spreading the coffee stain, you will want to begin cleaning along the edges of the stain. Start on the outside of the stain and work your way inward to the center. Blot with a dry cloth to remove the moisture in the carpet. Once the stain is gone it is important to rinse the site with cold water. Pour cold water on the stain and once again blot with a dry cloth until most of the moisture is adsorbed into the cloth and out of the carpet. Again, avoid rubbing the site as it will damage the carpet and cause it to flatten.

How to Clean an Old Coffee Stain

If you have coffee stains that are old they can become much harder to remove. However, you will essentially repeat the same steps as you would a fresh stain. You will need to start by applying warm water over the old stain to help loosen up the coffee in the carpet. Follow the same steps as before to remove the stain. If the coffee stain doesn’t come out then consider a professional carpet cleaning service. A professional service will have strong carpet cleaning solvents that can remove those tougher stains, including coffee stains in carpets.

As we start to really spend time outside and are enjoying the spring season, it isn’t uncommon for many people to start making a list of all the things that need to be done around the house. These may be tasks that you don’t get done on a regular basis, but need some attention occasionally. Your flooring should be something that you are cleaning regularly, but giving it a deep cleaning should definitely be on your list of things that need to be done. Carpet Care 2000 is here to share some tips for giving your flooring a deep cleaning this spring.

Deep Clean Dirty Carpet

While vacuuming on a regular basis will extend the life of your carpet drastically, you need to give them a deep clean at least once, if not twice, a year as well. This means cleaning your carpet clear down to the pad to remove the dirt and dust that slowly accumulates and works to break down the fibers. Tackling the task of cleaning your carpets in your own may be too much. It is important that you don’t over saturate them in the process which can lead to mold and mildew problems. It is also important that you don’t use too much cleaner and properly rinse it out or the stains that you just removed will quickly return.

Natural Stone, Manmade Tile & Grout Cleaning

It’s no secret that tile flooring is one of the most durable flooring choices for your home. With little maintenance, they can look wonderful for years. It isn’t the actual tile that usually needs to be deep cleaned, but the grout definitely does. This porous surface can trap all sorts of dirt, debris and staining over time. When you turn to professionals to clean your tile and grout, you will be amazed at how dirty the grout actually was.

Clean Baseboards & Upholstered Furniture

While you are focusing on cleaning the flooring, you shouldn’t forget the baseboards and furniture. Your baseboards are something that you don’t likely clean on a regular basis, but dust accumulates on them and can make the room look dirty. Your furniture is also something that shouldn’t be ignored. A professional furniture cleaning can really brighten the space as well as make your upholstery healthier for your loved ones.

Granite countertops are beautiful and can last forever with the proper care. Depending on the type of granite, it can range from 6 to 7 on the hardness scale with diamond being at 10. Due to the hardness or strength of granite, it is a very durable material. However, even the strongest materials need maintenance. Granite requires proper maintenance to ensure it doesn’t decay or prematurely wear down. Carpet Care 2000 will share how to properly care for granite and when to reseal to ensure its longevity.

Is Sealing Granite Countertops Necessary?

As a general rule, granite countertops greatly benefit from professional cleaning and resealing at least once a year. Most people use their countertops daily, which exposes the protective sealer to a lot of abuse. Since countertops undergo a lot of use, it is important that they are properly maintained. Granite countertops use a polymer and nanotechnology which ensures the sealer will last an extended period of time. With a good sealer over the granite, keeping the countertops clean is simple enough. When cleaning countertops that are properly sealed, they only require mild soap and water to remove any surface gunk.

How Often Do You Have to Seal Granite Countertops?

There are certain factors to consider when determining how often to seal the granite. One is the color of your granite. Darker colored granite such as Black Pearl, Indian Coffee Brown, and Tan Brown are more dense and is higher on the hardness scale. Darker colored granite can go longer in between resealing the granite. However, lighter colored granite will require more frequent resealing as they are softer and more prone to stains and decay. Depending on the sealer you apply to the countertop, some can last 3 years instead of 1 year. However, the longer the sealer life, the more expensive they tend to be. Some of the higher grade and longer lasting sealers are Stonetech and Bullet Proof Sealant which are manufactured by DuPont. Another consideration is the ongoing care of the granite. If using a high grade sealer and routinely cleaning of the countertop with Revitalizer you can extend the need for resealing even longer. Revitalizer is a liquid cleaner that is mixed with a sealant that helps to restore weakened areas on the countertop, renewing the sealer each time it is cleaned.

Granite Water Drop Test

Sealer can wear away under a number of different circumstances. This is why you should never leave anything to chance. It is recommended to test your sealer on your granite once a month. Testing the granite sealer is simple enough and doesn’t take too much effort. All you need to do is put a few drops of water on the frequently used areas on your granite. Wait five to ten minutes and wipe the water away. If the granite looks damp within the stone, you need to reseal your granite. If water is in the stone this means the sealer is no longer protecting the surface and is vulnerable to erosion.

Though very similar, in the home the care for rugs and carpets differ. Area rugs require special care since they provide unique texture, patterns, and color to your interior designs in any room. With this in mind, we at Carpet Care 2000 would like to discuss the basics of area rug cleaning and some tips on removing spots. To keep your area rug looking glorious, no matter their size or material, below you will find the standard steps and tips.

Vacuum Area Rugs Often

The dirt and debris wear the fibers of the rugs down quicker than vacuuming does, contrary to popular belief. Vacuuming on regular basis can reduce the wear, which helps extend the life of
your rugs. Avoid vacuuming any edge fringe and be sure to turn down the setting before vacuuming shag rug.

Pet Hair Remover Brush for Area Rugs

For removing pet fur from the area rug, some vacuums are not highly effective and reduces the volume, which is better on the vacuum. As a more efficient alternative, once a week use a stiff brush to gently remove pet hair.

Rotate Area Rugs

Throughout the year, the area rugs should be rotated. Every few months, rotate the area rug to help make sure that the rug wears and fades evenly by distributing the foot traffic and sun exposure as opposed keeping the wear from foot traffic concentrated in one area or path.

Beat or Shake Out Rug Free of Debris

Take the rugs outside and shake them vigorously once every week or two, or more often if you can spare the time, and remember, the more the better. Making the vacuuming process even more effective, use paddle or tennis racket first to loosen and remove dirt and particles that wear your rugs out faster.

Deep Area Rug Cleaning

If there are any special care instructions or warnings, look for the label on your rugs for starters. There are area rugs that require dry-cleaning or spot cleaning only in some instances.

Machine Washable Rugs

Wash the machine washable rugs on a delicate cycle and place them in a mesh bag. Do not put them in the dryer as they can shrink and set in any tough stains, nor use warm water unless otherwise instructed from the label’s instructions. If weather permits, wash your rugs on cold then hang them to dry in a well-ventilated area, outside is ideal.

Remove Old Stains from Rugs

Never scrub or rub since you will only force the substance in the fibers deeper in the fibers. First, gently blot away any moisture. To treat the residual stains, use your choice of homemade solution or a store-bought stain remover. In a spray bottle, combine a mixing 1 teaspoon dishwashing detergent, 4 cups of warm water, and ¼ teaspoon white vinegar as a multi-stain remover. To ensure it is used safely without compromising the rug or color, be sure to conduct a patch test in a small, inconspicuous area.

Where many kids are busy with school responsibilities and grownups have the benefit (or curse) of working from home, keeping kids busy after home schooling can be challenging, given the limitations. Turning to crafting can help keep them busy for a time, but all too often the clumsy fingers might leave stains on the carpets. Today, we at Carpet Care 2000 would like to offer some tips for removing popular crafting substances from the carpet.

Pre-Stain Removal Tips

Always conduct a patch test of any carpet cleaning liquid, homemade or store bought, in an inconspicuous area when treating carpets. 1) Immediately remove the bulk with a spoon to scoop it up and place on a paper towel for easy disposal.
2) First, use a water-dampen sponge, to work the exterior toward the interior of the stain.

4) As needed, repeat.
5) To prevent over saturation, rinse with cool water and cloth.
6) Dry by blotting with a clean, dry towel.

How to Remove Washable Paint from Carpet

1) Scoop away the bulk of the paint with a spoon and smear it on paper towels.
2) Blot any the remaining residue with a paper towel, be sure to pat the stain from the outside in and don’t us excessive pressure.
3) If the paint has dried, use a dull edge, like a spatula or butter knife to carefully scrape the top layer much as possible.
4) Combine 1 cup warm water and 1/2 tsp dish soap in a spray bottle or bucket.
5) Spray the solution on the blemish enough to dampen it and gently work out the stain with a clean cloth.
5) Until stain is completely dissolved, repeat as necessary, until stain is completely dissolved.
6) Carefully walk along the area to lift up detergents and remaining stain after placing an old, clean old towel on top of the area.
7) Be sure to blot thoroughly after rinsing the area with cool water in a spray bottle or sponge cool water to the area.
8) Should the spot develop into a brownish color, mix 2 parts water with 1-part white vinegar, and sponge the mixture onto the area, blot, and repeat as necessary. To avoid oversaturation, make sure to blot in between applications.

How to Clean Playdoh from Carpet

1) If the playdoh has dried, vacuum as much of the remnants as possible.
2) Should playdoh remain, us hot water to dampen a cloth and place it on top of the play dough. Let it soak for about an hour to make the playdoh more pliable and easier to remove.
3) With a stiff brush, brush the play dough off the carpet to remove any small bits of play dough stuck to the carpet. Be gentle to make sure you do not damage the carpet.
4) If the playdoh is still moist, use a chunk of playdoh to stick to the bits in the carpet.

For years people have debated about the best way to keep your home clean. Everyone has their own opinion about what products and cleaners work the best for every surface in your home. You probably know what works best for you at this point. One area that Carpet Care 2000 finds people waffle on is whether or not they should allow shoes to be worn on their carpets. We are going to talk about some of the pros and cons of wearing your shoes on the carpet in your home.

Should You Wear Shoes on the Carpet in the House?

Those in the shoes on camp have a few arguments that they use to support their opinion. One of the most frequently used arguments is that doormats will help get rid of the dirt that is on your shoes before you come into your home. They state that they teach their family to thoroughly wipe their feet off before they come inside so that they can keep their carpets clean.
Perhaps the biggest issue that some people have with asking people to remove their shoes is that they feel like it is rude. Why ask someone to come to your house if you are going to make them remove their shoes before they come all the way into your home? Asking your guests to take their shoes off could make your guests uncomfortable. People with this opinion would rather clean regularly instead of being seen as rude. The third reason that the shoes on camp will give is that if they regularly vacuum their carpets and have Carpet Care 2000 come out and professionally clean their carpets then their carpets will stay clean no matter what. They truly feel like routine cleaning will compensate for any dirt that finds its way onto your carpets from the shoes that people wear on it.

Take Your Shoes Off when Walking on Carpet

The shoes off side of the debate has some standard arguments that they use as well. They state that you wear your shoes on dirty surfaces throughout your day. When you come home and wear your shoes inside you are tracking all of that dirt and grime onto your carpets. All of this dirt and grime will ruin your carpet. In rebuttal to the doormat argument used by the shoes on people, this group will state that the doormat is not effective for a variety of reasons. First the mat is outside. Simply by being outside, the mat is dirty. Wiping your feet on a dirty mat will not truly clean your shoes. They also state that when you wipe your shoes on your doormat the dirt and grime stay in your doormat. Then the next person that uses the doormat to wipe their feet gets that dirt on your shoes anyways.

So, what side of the debate are you on? No matter what side of the argument you fall on, you will want to make sure that you vacuum your carpet on a regular basis. You will also want to have Carpet Care 2000 come out and professionally clean your carpet routinely. Give us a call to schedule your appointment.

With all the media attention given to a new strain of coronavirus that is distributed through sneezing, coughing, talking, and physical contact. When it comes to the carpets and upholstery, many homeowners are concerned with what should be done. Where the hard surfaces can be easily disinfected, the carpets and upholstery are another story. We at Carpet Care 2000 would like to offer some suggestions on how to clean the textiles in your home for coronavirus prevention.

How Long Does Coronavirus & Covid-19 Live on Fabric?

Depending on humidity, temperature, and the porosity of the surface where the virus is found indicates the lifespan of the infectious viruses. Findings showed the virus remained infectious about twice as long on non-porous surfaces, like metal and plastic, as porous surfaces, like wood, clothing, and the like with a 2011 study called Survival of Influenza A (H1N1) on Materials Found in Households: Implications for Infection Control. Since it less hospitable to viruses than non-porous surfaces and more so on carpet and upholstery are porous and need care. Keeping the carpets cool and dry is a help. The new strain of coronavirus, like similar viruses, including SARS and MERS, can survive for anywhere from 2 hours to 9 days on a surface according to a study recently concerning the coronaviruses on inanimate surfaces and their inactivation with biocidal agents. Though there are proven methods for preventing the spread of known coronaviruses, the methods have not been tested for this specific virus. Our recommendations for dealing with the new strain of coronavirus on carpet and upholstery can only be based on what coronaviruses in general until more information is available. With this in mind, no one can any guarantee that professional carpet cleaning will eliminate the new strain of coronaviruses.

Surface Cleaning

Particularly during flu season, it is always a good idea to protect your family by keeping all of your surfaces clean.
1) With sanitizing liquid soap and warm water, wash your hands frequently.
2) Light switches, doorknobs, as well as countertops, walls, and floors, along with other hand-traffic surfaces need to be disinfected.
3) Vacuum often using a HEPA filter in your vacuum to ensure small particles are trapped instead of being blown back into the air.
4) Schedule professional cleaning services and request disinfectant products on carpets, rugs, and upholstery as well as the mattress.

Do not forget about your fine surfaces, like carpet, rugs, and upholstery as you improve your normal cleaning routine and sanitize your home as these surfaces are frequently overlooked. When one has a virus, the couch is the cozy, comfortable resting place. Having your carpets and upholstery cleaned and then treated can help ease your mind while addressing the coronavirus by a proper professional carpet and upholstery cleaning involves both heat and moisture. To decrease the chances of coronavirus surviving on your interior textiles, the new strain of coronavirus proves to be like those already tested in the past. When you want to ensure your carpets and upholstery are cleaned and disinfected, call Carpet Care 2000.
