For those who work hard to keep their upholstery clean and free of stains, keep in mind that it is important to clean stains as they occur. It is also important to clean the stains properly or you could be ruining the furniture. Too many times furniture is ruined due to improper stain cleaning. Carpet Care 2000 will share how to properly remove stains from upholstery without damaging or ruining your furniture.

Vacuum Fabric Sofa

When taking care of your upholstery it is a good practice to always vacuum the upholstery’s surface once a week. This way if a stain does occur, you will have better success removing the stain. Dirt trapped in the upholstery can cause water or mineral stains to worsen. If you haven’t vacuumed your upholstery lately, make sure to vacuum the stain site before you begin cleaning the stain itself. By vacuuming the site first, you will be able to clean the stains without dirt or other substances causing the stain to multiply. Additionally, vacuum up the stained area first. This helps to remove some of the stain particles away as well.

Cleaning Code on Couch

Next, before you begin cleaning the stain, check your upholstery’s cleaning codes. Upholstery is made with a number of different fabric blends. This is why upholstery will have a tag with a cleaning code to let you know how to properly clean the fabric. There are four codes that are used to help provide a cleaning guide:
(W) – Code W stands for water based cleaning, so you should use water based shampoo or foam cleaner. It is safe to use a soft brush or sponge when cleaning W upholstery. However, never over wet W code upholstery as they can develop water ring stains.
(S) – Code S fabric stands for solvent or chem dry cleaning only. It is important to avoid water based cleaner. Only use dry-chem or solvent cleaners when cleaning S fabrics. Avoid using water to rinse or clean the stain.
(W/S) – Code W/S means it is safe to use a solvent or chem-dry cleaners, as well as water based cleaners. However, if you need to soak the fabric, dry the site with a fan.
(X) – Code X means you should not use any type of cleaner and only vacuum or lightly brush the surface.
