How to Clean a Vacuum Cleaner that Smells

Tip #1. Odors from dust, dirt and pet dander will make the vacuum start to smell. Change the interior bag and wash the exterior one. There are some exterior bags that can be washed in the washing machine. If yours can’t, just use warm water and a damp cloth to wipe it down.
Tip #2. If your vacuum is equipped without a bag, meaning it’s bagless, you can wash out the plastic canister with warm water and dish soap. Dirt and grime can stick to the sides of the canister and cause it to stink. Doing this on a regular basis will prevent the dust and dirt from building up inside the canister.
Tip #3. You can add a tablespoon of baking soda to the inside of the vacuum bag. If yours is a bagless vacuum, sprinkle several tablespoons of baking soda right onto the carpet, let it set for a few minutes and then vacuum. Baking soda does a great job at eliminating odors in your refrigerator and will do the same for your carpets and vacuum cleaner.
Tip #4. You can use cinnamon or lemon verbena and sprinkle it inside the vacuum bag. You can sprinkle these spices right onto the carpet if you have dark-colored carpets and then vacuum. Sprinkling these inside the vacuum bag will have your vacuum smelling nice for a few uses.
Tip #5. Take a fabric softener sheet, like Bounce, and put it right inside the bag or plastic compartment. Every time you switch your vacuum cleaner on, the fabric softener sheet will be activated and release the smell. The fabric softener sheet will also permeate the bag or plastic compartment and smell fresh every time you use it. Replace the sheet when the smell isn’t very strong anymore.
Tip #6. Dirt and grime buildup can also be removed by wiping the exterior of the vacuum cleaner with warm water and dishwashing soap. Once you’re done, use a disinfectant spray to get rid of any germs or smells that linger.
