If your home recently encountered flooding due to a broken pipe or a faulty appliance, you may be wondering if you’re able to recover your area rug. After a rug has been completely saturated the area rug will need intense cleaning in order to prevent decay, mildew or molding. Carpet Care 2000 will share how to recover an area rug after it has been soaked after flooding.
Dry Your Area Rug
When flooding first occurs, the first step is to determine the source of the flooding and make sure it has been repaired. Naturally the entire flooded area will need attention. However, the focus right now is on the area rug. When a rug gets soaked, if possible remove the rug to a dry area. A wet rug won’t dry quickly enough unless it is in an open area with plenty of air flow. Additionally, the rug can damage the flooring underneath it, especially if it’s wood flooring. If possible, take the rug outside on a deck or patio. With the rug in a suitable place for cleaning and drying you will want to remove as much water as possible.
Area Rug Water Extraction
It is recommended to use a large window squeegee and begin pushing the water out. Make sure to go in the same direction each time. You can use the back of a garden rake or whatever tool you have available to remove as much water as possible. Once you remove the excess water using a shop vacuum, remove the filter and begin sucking out the remainder of the water. Make sure to take your time removing the water out of the rug. In the case of a large area rug that has been completely soaked, you know it can be very heavy to move. So, by using the shop vacuum first, it will help remove much of the water trapped inside the rug.
Clean & Disinfect Area Rug
Once you finish sucking out as much water as you can with the shop vacuum, let the rug finish drying. You can use fans to help the rug dry faster. Occasionally flip the rug over to help dry the back side. Once the rug is dry you will want the rug cleaned and treated with a mold prevention cleaning solvent. If you have a carpet cleaning machine or you have rented one, you will want to use an anti-bacterial formula cleaner in the carpet cleaning machine to prevent mold or mildew from developing inside the rug.
Clean Area Rug Fast After a Water Leak or Flood
It is important to move fast during a flood. Sometimes other aspects of the flooding may come which may cause the rug to become ruined if not cleaned in time. In that case, some things are best left to the professionals. When recovering carpet or rugs after a flooding, time is everything. Using a professional flood damage restoration service is often beneficial. If you wish to recover rugs, and carpet after a flood, it pays to seek help.
