Nothing spruces up a room quite like a fresh coat of paint. However, it doesn’t seem to matter how careful you are, once the job is done, somehow paint got on the carpeting. For most people, their first instinct is to panic. There is no way you can get that paint out of the carpet, or is there? Carpet Care 2000 is here to share some tips that will help you get rid of that paint spill that happened on your carpeting.

How to Get Wet Latex Paint Out of Carpet

Hopefully, you noticed the paint spill right away. You will have a much higher success rate if the paint is still wet when trying to remove it. Just make sure you follow some steps:
1. Do Not Scrub the Carpet– This goes against everything we have ever been taught. If something is dirty, you scrub the dirt off of it, right? Not when it comes to carpeting. When you scrub the carpet, you are actually pushing the stain deeper into the fibers. To get rid of the paint spill, blot and don’t scrub.
2. Get Out the Dish Soap– Once you have gotten most of the paint off the surface of the carpet, it is time to get rid of this stain. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and generously mix in some dish soap. Working from the outside of the stain to the center, continue to blot the stain with a rag saturated in the dish soap and water mixture. Use a clean rag or paper towel to remove excess moisture as you work.
3. Carpet Stain Remover– If you were unsuccessful at removing the stain with dish soap, you can always turn to the plethora of carpet stain removers. It is important that you do a patch test to make sure it isn’t going to damage your carpet, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely.

How to Remove Dried Paint from Carpeting

Of course, your chances of removing paint from your carpet is much higher when you notice it right away, but here are some tips to try when removing dried paint.
1. Remove Excess Paint- Using a knife that isn’t going to damage your carpet, scrape away as much paint as possible before getting started.
2. Wet Carpet to Loosen Paint- Grab the dish soap like mentioned above and mix with lukewarm water. Pour some of the mixture onto the carpet and let it stand. It should loosen the dried paint and make it easier to get rid of.
3. Try Steam- If the dish soap soak didn’t work, you can always try the steam method. Using a handheld steamer or your iron on the steam setting, try using steam to loosen the paint. If you are using your iron, make sure you put a wet rag between the iron and carpet so it doesn’t melt your carpet.
4. Remove Paint Again- After you have loosened the paint with one of these methods, us the knife again to scrape any loosened paint off the carpet.

1. Keep as much dirt off carpet as possible. Dirt is surprisingly the primary cause of carpet deterioration. Dirt and dust attracts dust mites, which also aid in the wear and tear. When dust and dirt accumulate, a hidden stock pile makes it way under the carpet, and even under the padding. With the traction of the dirt, and folks walking back and forth, the natural action creates a sand paper effect, and wears out your carpet; eventually the carpet looks old, dingy, and unattractive and needs early retirement. If possible, insist everyone in your home wipes their feet, and takes their shoes off at the door. Avoid leaving windows and doors open on a windy day to avoid the amount of dirt your carpets get exposed to.
2. Vacuum carpet. With the related information regarding dirt, it is best to vacuum your carpets frequently. Make sure you have your vacuum setting to the appropriately for your style of carpet. Even in areas that don’t receive a lot of foot traffic, as dust and allergens settle on the carpets surface. For the high traffic areas, vacuum as needed or a minimum of 4 times a week or daily if needed. In the places where little to no foot traffic occurs, vacuum 1-2 times to keep the dust off.
3. Remove carpet stains as soon as possible. Whenever an accidental spill happens, it is best to tend to the stain as quickly as you can. Remove the stain accordingly to the type of stain it is can give it less of a chance to set in, and easier to lift. No matter if you choose commercial carpet cleaners, or prefer to make your own homemade cleaning solutions, always conduct a patch test in an inconspicuous are to ensure the cleaner doesn’t compromise the integrity of the carpet fibers, or the color.
4. Periodically rearrange your furniture. By rearranging your furniture every so often, you will create new foot traffic patterns as well as where the sun will shine in on the exposed carpet, naturally fading the away carpet’s hues. Moving the furniture will also help keep the divots from becoming too difficult to relax down the road.
5. Professional carpet cleaning. Hire a professional to come and clean your carpets 1-2 times a year. Even if your carpets still appear to be clean and are stain and/or odor free, a professional should still be called upon to remove the dirt that has penetrated beneath the surface.

Tile and grout is a common flooring used in bathrooms, kitchens, and utility rooms. Tile is a durable floor and unlike other flooring, is no match for water. Nevertheless, tile and grout can be severely damaged by water allowing the dry wall and sub flooring to also be exposed and damaged by water. Carpet Care 2000 will share how tile and grout develops water damage and how you can prevent it.

Improper Tile Installation

Water damaged tile and grout more often than not occurs when the tile was improperly or poorly installed. When installing tile, one of the more crucial steps is filling in the grout. If the grout is not mixed right or the grout isn’t installed correctly, it can have gaps or holes where water can seep through. The water that seeps in between the grout will begin to cause mold and water damage from underneath the tile. Over time, tile can begin to fall off and the grout can break apart in chunks. The only answer to improperly installed tile is to remove the old tile and repair the material it was laid on, then properly reinstall. Most improperly laid tile and grout occurs during DIY installation. It is recommended to seek professional help installing tile to prevent water damage.

Problems with Unsealed Tile & Grout

Sealing tile, and particularly the grout, is essential. The sealer not only helps tile and grout look brighter, it helps to keep tile and grout clean, In addition, it also protects the grout. Grout is prone to cracks and will break apart which will allow water to seep through the grout lines and begin to cause water damage. Tile and grout that has never been sealed is prone to water damage, especially those in the bathroom. To prevent water damage to tile and grout, it is highly recommended to have the tile and grout line sealed. Tile and grout sealer will also wear down over time. Sealer will need to be reapplied every few years. Depending on the brand of sealer you use, how long it last will vary. As soon as the sealer begins to show signs of wear, it is time to reseal the tile and grout for long lasting protection.

Improper Grout Mix Ratio

As mentioned previously, improper grout mix can cause grout to weaken or simply break apart very quickly. For those who do DIY tile and grout installation, to avoid running into mixing errors it is recommended to buy a pre-mix grout. For those who mix yourself, often the mix is wrong. One soon finds that the grout will simply break apart or will not fill the grout line correctly. To avoid major water damage to your home tile and grout, avoid using grout that you mix yourself and stick to the pre-mixed grout instead.

Water damage can effect tile and grout and can cause even more damages to material underneath the tile. For tile that is on the wall, keep in mind that drywall cannot get wet. The same goes for wooden sub floors. It is essential to protect your tile and grout from water damages to prevent major water damage to your home. Carpet is by far one of the most comfortable flooring choices you can have in your home. If you have replaced your carpet, you know how costly it can be. You also know that after several years; it doesn’t look quite the same as it did when you first had it installed. It starts to show traffic patterns, dirt and accidents from pets and kids. If you look around and this is what you are noticing on the carpet around you, it may leave you asking when the appropriate time is to replace it all together. Carpet Care 2000 is here to talk about carpet replacement and what you can expect out of your carpet.

Average Lifespan of Wall-to-Wall Carpet

There are many variables that play into the amount of time you can expect your carpet to last. If you have several small children and pets, you probably won’t have carpet last as long as two retired individuals that don’t have nearly the amount of traffic in their home. Some of the other factors that play a role include the quality of the carpeting, the type of carpet and how well you clean and maintain it. A good indication of how long your carpet will last is the amount of people and pets in your home. The more people, the sooner you are going to need to replace your carpet. Most people can plan to replace their carpet between 5 and 15 years after it was installed. You will notice that the rooms that you spend the most time in, like a living room, will show signs of wear much quicker than somewhere like a bedroom.

Carpet Installation Cost

This another aspect of carpet replacement that isn’t so cut and dry. The type of carpet you choose along with the quality and installation costs can vary from company to company. Some places may charge more for labor while others will charge more to remove old carpet. Most people can plan on carpet costing somewhere between $3-$11 for the average home.

How to Prolong Carpet Life & Make Carpets Last Longer

How soon you need to replace your carpet depends greatly on well you maintain it after installation. It takes more than simply vacuuming your home to keep the carpet in like new condition. You need to clean up spills and spots as soon as they happen to avoid them settling into the fibers of your carpet.

Is your carpet a victim of filtration soiling? Do you see black stains on your carpets around the edges of walls, under door frames or windows? This is a case of filtration soiling. Carpet Care 2000 will go over the causes of filtration soiling; what it is, how to clean it, and what to do to prevent filtration soiling from occurring on your carpets.

Soil Filtration Definition

Filtration soiling is when air enters a room faster than it can escape, then gets pushed back from the source as the air enters the room. Areas like air vents, windows with air conditioner units, and doorways. As the air continuously travels through those areas, your carpet acts as a filter that will trap in the air pollutants. Over time this will create those very upsetting black streaks on your carpets. The air pollutants that will commonly cause the carpet to get filtration soiling are smoke from cigarettes, dust, candles, cooking oils, and ash from fireplaces.

Filtration Soiling Carpet Cleaning

Cleaning filtration soiling can be rather difficult remove. For those do-it-yourself people out there you will need hot water extraction or steam to clean your carpets. However results do vary and sometimes it’s hard to remove with commercial grade cleaning solutions that won’t remove the stain completely. Most will hire a professional carpet cleaner to get the best results.

How to Prevent Filtration Soiling on Carpet

It’s far better to prevent the black streaking then it is to clean it. Carpet Care 2000 will go over the basic steps to prevent filtration soiling. We’ll begin with the HVAC systems. The air ducts throughout your home gather quite a bit of dirt. This dirt travels throughout your home as the A/C unit blows the cool air into each room. It is recommend to have your air duct cleaned regularly. This will greatly help reduce the dirt blowing onto your carpet. Also have your air filters changed often. This will also trap the dirt. Next step is to eliminate gaps. Keep doors open so the air isn’t forced under the doorway making the pollutants get trapped in your carpet. Allow the air to travel throughout the house. This doesn’t only help prevent the black streaking but improves the air circulation throughout your home. Gaps between base boards can be sealed with expandable foam, depending on the gap size. Finally, properly dealing with the pollutants. For those who smoke, you may want to make a new habit of smoking outside rather than inside. If you like the aroma of scented candles you may want to switch from burning candles to electric heaters that melt the wax. They release the scent rather then burning the wicks. If you have a fireplace burning to make those cold winter a bit cozier, clean up the ash regularly, and be careful not to make the ash airborne when sweeping it.

Grout is the cement-like material used to bond your ceramic or porcelain tiles together. Now that you have chosen the ceramic or porcelain tile you are going to use in your home, you need to choose the right grout. Grout comes in different colors and in a few different variations. You will want to make sure you choose the right one to compliment your tile flooring. Carpet Care 2000 would like to share some tips and a few things to consider when choosing the grout for your ceramic or porcelain tile flooring.

Choose the Right Type of Grout

Grout comes in four basic types. You will want to make sure you are picking the right grout for the surfaces it will be used on. Here is a run-down of the different types of grout you have to choose from:
• Finely Sanded Grout- When the tiles you have chosen are going to be 1/8”-3/8” wide, this is the best option for you.
• Unsanded Grout- This type of grout is usually used for wall tiles that have a grout joint of 1/8” wide or less.
• Quarry-Type Grout- This type of grout is a bit coarser than the finely sanded grout, and can be used for wider grout joints 3/8”-1/2”.
• Epoxy Grout- This is a very hard grout type. It consists of epoxy resin and hardener which makes it very stain resistant and a great option for countertops or other areas that would need extra protection.
Keep in mind when choosing your grout, the wider the grout joint, the coarser the sand needs to be. This will help you avoid your grout shrinking and cracking.

Tile & Grout Color Combinations

Grout comes in a variety of different colors. You can get grout sample sticks from your hardware store that can be very helpful when choosing the color. Some considerations that you may want to make might be:
• Decide whether or not you want the grout to blend or highlight the tiles you are using. Darker grout is a durable option if you are worried about staining. If you are wanting a lighter grout color and still concerned about staining, you will definitely want to have the grout sealed to prevent stains.
• For darker colors, you may want to find a grout that blends in with the tile. Keep in mind that the sample sticks are usually a bit darker than the actual grout will be when it is completely dry.
• If you are working with tile that has many colors throughout it, or with mosaic tiles, you will want the grout to match at least one of the colors found in the tile.
• Using bright colored grout can help highlight and create bold patterns with tile. If you are wanting to make a statement with your tile flooring, you might want to consider a grout that will stand out to create a stronger pattern.

Nothing is much worse than coming in a room to see that there is a spill on the carpet. The carpet is a big part of the room and the home and you want it to look its very best. The problem with a stain is that it can make a big impact on the room and cause the room to look dirty and messy. The spill needs to be treated and cleaned up as soon as possible to ensure that it is cleaned and removed totally. The problem is when you go and clean the area and it seems to be gone only to see it pop back up a few days later. This is what is called a reappearing stain! It can be very frustrating and you may not understand why it is happening. Carpet Care 2000 outlines what a reappearing stain is, why it is happening and how to prevent it.

Why Do Stains on Carpet Keep Coming Back?

There are really two main reasons that a stain that seems to have been cleaned makes a reappearance. The first reason is from something that is called wicking. This is when the stain has been cleaned up but only on the surface. The stain has soaked down in the backing of the carpet and in the padding and will come back up through the fibers causing that stain to come back. The typical reason this happens is when the cleaning equipment was not up to par and when the carpet gets wet again the stain will soak back up to the top. The other reason for a stain to reappear is from soiling. Soiling is when the stain is cleaned except the residue is left behind. It can be from the original stain or from the cleaning products that were used. The residue causes the carpet to become sticky and that is a perfect atmosphere for dirt to collect on that exact spot.

How to Prevent Carpet Wicking Stains

There are several things you can do to stop a stain from reappearing on your carpets. The spill needs to be treated and taken care of right away to get as much of the stain off the carpet while it is still fresh. This is how you can help the spill from getting deep in the carpet and in the backing and fibers. To take the spot cleaning to another level you can use a clean rag or paper towel to lay over the newly cleaned area. Then stack up come heavy objects on top. This will help pull out any excess water or moisture. Another way to help your carpets from suffering from reappearing stains is to have a professional carpet cleaner come out and take care of the spot cleaning. They can do that while they are out cleaning the carpets on a regular basis.
