Dust mites are the little bugs all over our home that we like to pretend don’t exist. This may be well and good until you start suffering from a dust mite allergy. Then all of a sudden, you need to address this concern and get rid of these allergy inducing pests. There are several things you can do that will greatly decrease the amount of dust mites you have on your fabric surfaces in your home. Carpet Care 2000 is here to share some of our best tips to help you get the dust mites and your allergies under control.

What Kills Dust Mites on Carpet & Fabric Upholstery

Following are some of the most effective ways to reduce the amount of dust mites that live on your furniture and in your bed.
– Use the Right Vacuum: While vacuuming is important, if you aren’t using the right one, the dust mite situation is going to remain the same. You should be using a vacuum that has a HEPA filter to clean your home. A HEP filter will keep the dust mites from simply getting released back into the air during the vacuuming process. You should be vacuuming your home every other day to really notice a difference.
– Dust Mite Bed Protector: Your bed is one of the places that can get overrun with dust mites if you aren’t careful. If your bed is already infested with dust mites, you can’t do much to eliminate them. If you have a new bed, you need a dust mite bed protector that will make your bed a less appealing place for these allergens.
– Wash Fabric Regularly: You need to be washing your bedding and your pillows regularly to keep up on top of the dust mite population. Always wash on the hottest setting possible to effectively kill them.
– Use a Steam Cleaner: Nothing will kill dust mites quite as fast as the high temperature steam that comes from a steam cleaner. These can be used on furniture as well as your bedding to get rid of dust mites.
– Reduce Humidity in Home: Dust mites don’t like dry places and will naturally gravitate to more humid conditions to thrive. Lower the humidity in your home to avoid dust mites.
– Wipe with Eucalyptus Oil: This essential oil is one that will help you to kill dust mites when you use it to clean. This can be safely sprayed on your furniture as well as your bed to help eliminate this problem.

Installing new carpet not only enhances the beauty of a home but provides insulation sound control, and a comfortable surface to walk on. When you have carpet installed in your home you are making an investment in your home. Depending on the carpet you choose, you may be making a significant one. Carpet Care 2000 outlines what you can do to keep carpet looking great for as long as possible.

Vacuum Often

While it’s impossible to keep all dust and dirt from getting into our carpets there’s a way we can get it out when it does. We need to vacuum. You should vacuum your carpets 2-3 times a week. Make you use a good vacuum with an empty bag to collect all that dust and dirt. Empty the bag each time you use your vacuum cleaner to ensure it cleans as efficiently as possible. You may need to pass over high traffic areas up to 5 times. Most other areas should be fine with 2-3.

Taking Shoes Off to Walk on Carpet

The best way you can keep your carpet looking great is to leave all the dirt outside. Walking around the house with your shoes on will make them dirty and can damage it too. Dirt and debris can be abrasive to carpet fibers and break them down. Take your shoes off at the door to keep them clean and prevent damage.

Move Furniture Around Carpet

Walking over the same areas every day will wear your carpet down. You can slow this process down by changing the layout of your home. Change it every six months or so to even everything out and allow your carpet to “feel” a new walking routine. Your carpet will last longer and won’t receive as much wear and tear on the same areas.

How Often Should You Clean Your Carpet?

Many professionals recommend carpet cleaning every 12-18 months, others recommend 6-12. However, if you have children and/or pets, your carpet may need stain removal and a thorough cleaning more often. Many new carpets have a warranty with instructions regarding carpet cleaning to keep the warranty valid.

After Professional Carpet Cleaning

Your carpets are clean. Now what? While you should try and stay off it, you can step on your carpet when it is still damp. It is best to wear clean rubber soled shoes until it’s completely dry and remember to keep your shoes at the door to avoid and re-soiling. You also need to be careful not to slip when you walk from damp carpeted areas to non-carpeted areas. Your carpet should be completely dry in 6-12 hours. Factors like humidity, temperature, and air flow within your home will determine exactly how long it will take. Set your thermostat to 70 degrees with the fan on and turn ceiling fans on to facilitate drying time. Foam pads under furniture legs is also helpful to avoid any color transfer to your carpet.

Cooped up inside with nowhere to go, there is likely romance in the air at your place. Out comes the quarantine chocolates and perhaps some red wine … which sometimes ends up being spilled on your carpets. When red wine spills on the carpet it can leave a permanent stain as the red pigmentation is strong in wines. When red wines spills on the carpet you must act fast in order to remove the wine and prevent a nasty stain on your carpets. There are a number of ways to remove red wine from the carpet and Carpet Care 2000 would like to share some of the best methods today.

Soak Up Red Wine from Carpet

Regardless as to what method you use to clean red wine, you will still want to remove as much of the red wine as possible before you begin cleaning the carpet. When red wine spills on the carpet you will first want to get a white cloth and gently press on the spill. Next, pour table salt or talcum powder over the top of the spill. The salt or talcum will absorb much of the moisture from the wine out of the carpet. Remove the salt or talcum with a vacuum cleaner. From this point you will want to use your preferred stain cleaning method.

How to Use Club Soda to Remove Carpet Stains

For those who keep club soda handy, you can use a tablespoon of club soda and pour it onto a sponge. Dab the soaked sponge over the stain. You may need to repeatedly add club soda and dab at the stain. Be sure to rinse the site of the stain with plain water and blot with a dry cloth to remove the remaining club soda out of the carpet.

Vinegar & Ammonia to Remove Red Wine from Carpet

If you have vinegar and ammonia on hand, you will first use the ammonia. Mix the ammonia in a bowl with one cup of warm water. Use a white cloth and dab it into the mixture. You will want the cloth saturated, not just damp. Dab at the red wine stain with the diluted ammonia. The ammonia may not remove the stain completely. Get a new dry cloth and soak up the ammonia. Next, use plain white wine vinegar and soak a piece of the cloth with the vinegar and continue dabbing at the stain. Together, the stain should be completely removed from the carpet. Make sure to rinse the stain site.

Will Baking Soda Remove Red Wine from Carpet?

When using baking soda, you will first want to fill a bowl with ½ cup warm water and another half cup of baking soda. Mix the baking soda into a paste. Using a toothbrush, gently apply the paste over the red wine stain. Make sure the paste liberally covers the stain and let the paste dry. After the paste is dry, use a vacuum cleaner to suck up the dried paste.

Why Does White Wine Remove Red Wine Stains

You can also combat a red wine stain with white wine. Pour a cup of white wine over the top of the red wine stain. The white wine will help make the red wine stain disappear. Leave the white wine over the top of the stain for about 30 minutes or longer. Use water to rinse the site as before.

Pets make life fun but the urine they leave behind can permanently damage your flooring. It can also create an unhealthy indoor environment for you and your family. Right after urine has been deposited, it has a pH of about 5 or 6. This is on the acidic side of the pH scale. It is also much easier to remove when they are fresh. When urine dries it turns “alkaline” and has a pH between 10 and 12. It also becomes more difficult to remove. Urine is warm and acidic, and the perfect breeding ground for bacteria to flourish right away. Urine will start to oxidize and react with your carpet. It will change the color of it permanently if it’s not removed immediately. Some of the color change is due to the strong ammonia that forms as the urine passes through a bacterial and chemical change.

Sources of Pet Odor on Carpet

There are two sources of odors that are linked to urine. One comes from bacteria that grows like crazy in a dark, warm environment with all the food it needs. Your pet can feed that bacteria on a daily basis! Amino acids are created with the bacteria growth and the breakdown of the urine. These acids will move deeply into the carpet fibers and become part of them. The gases that the decomposing urine emits creates an unpleasant odor. Any time the urine moistened it will produce ammonia gas. The other source of odor comes from a chemical odor that persists even when the bacteria have been killed. This is the reason that the affected area needs to be sanitized to neutralize odors. The problem will intensify if humidity levels are high. When the urine dries the salts and crystal that are left behind will draw water to them. This is the reason it’s easier to smell dried urine spots in the humid months where moisture will produce ammonia gas.

How Can I Remove Dog Urine Odor from Carpet

If you own pets, it’s a good idea to own a one-gallon wet vac. Having one on hand will make it more convenient when an accident occurs. Remember, you have a much better chance at removing pet odors when they are fresh. Simply suck the urine up and apply a product with a pet odor removal enzyme. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then pour a cup of warm water on the spot and suck it out of the carpet. Dry the spot as best as you can and do not scrub. Scrubbing can break down carpet fibers and remove any carpet protection. This leaves your carpet more prone to future stains.
Older urine spots will need an application of a pet odor removal enzyme followed by a rinse with warm water. Then you can use your wet vac. You will then need a solution of one-part white vinegar with 2 parts water. Apply this solution to the spot, rinse with warm water, and wet vac. The vinegar solution should only be used after 24 hours when the urine has become alkaline. If you use it on fresh urine the acid from the vinegar won’t be able to counter the acid in it.

You can spend all day cleaning but still fail to achieve the best results. One area of your home that may get neglected is the mattress in your bedroom. Just because you have a mattress that is covered with sheets and you wear your pajamas doesn’t mean your mattress is safe from dirt. To ensure you’re sleeping in a clean environment, it’s important to have your mattress cleaned on a regular basis.

Advantages of Mattress Cleaning

Improved indoor air quality in your bedroom. Do you notice a strange smell every time you walk into your bedroom? It might be coming from your dirty mattress. We all sweat as we sleep, and your mattress absorbs a lot of it. Sweat contains urea that can be smelly. If this smell is left to fester it will become worse and might affect the while house. Cleaning your mattress will make your bedroom smell better and your whole house too.
Mattress cleaning removes bacteria and germs. Having children and pets means there’s a lot of bacteria in your home, and because children and pets love to jump on your bed so will bacteria. Bacteria needs a safe breeding place and if your mattress is dirty bacteria will thrive. Your dirty mattress is warm and with the sweat you produce nightly you give bacteria everything it needs. Regular mattress cleaning washes bacteria away.
Mattress cleaning gets rid of dust mites. Dust mites are microscopic organisms that infest out bed. That means they are also infesting your mattress. Dust mites are a big problem and might be affecting you without you even knowing. Again, your mattress is a warm and moist place for dust mites to breed. The skin cells you shed are their food, and their droppings can make you sick. Clean your mattress regularly to eliminate health issues.
Reduce allergens with mattress cleaning. Your mattress will collect plenty of dirt with time. If you haven’t had your mattress cleaned, this dirt will combine with other organisms to cause allergic reactions in many people. You may be dealing with itchy eyes, sneezing, body scratching, among others. Dust and dirty alone can cause severe sneezing.
Clean mattresses last longer. Just like a car, the lifespan of your mattress will depend on the level of maintenance it gets. Cleaning your mattress is the best way to make it last longer. The dust and urine that accumulates in your mattress will make it look ten times older if you don’t clean it regularly. Urine can cause damage to your mattress long before it should. Clean your mattress to keep it as long as possible.
Better nights sleep. The best thing about mattress cleaning is the peace of mind it brings. You don’t need to worry about a smelly house when you have guests over. You don’t need to worry about sleeping in a dirty mattress that can cause health issues. You can be confident that the air in your home is clean and conducive to anyone that enters.

If your carpet is not new and has seen its better days, you may be faced with the question of repairing it or replacing it. Both of these options can leave you with carpet that is much better looking, and each have their own set of benefits. Repairing carpet may not be for everybody, but it is an option that many people overlook when they are faced with this dilemma. Carpet Care 2000 is here to talk about these two options, and what may or may not make them the best option for you.

Types of Carpet Damage

There are some times that stains happen and cannot be removed. Think about the last time your carpet got burned somehow; whether a curling iron was dropped on it, or a clothes iron fell and was left to burn. These kinds of stains can’t be removed. However, if you have the option to repair it with a piece of the same carpet you have, all of a sudden you have carpet that looks new again. The biggest thing that you need to remember is that you need to have pieces of your carpet to make this a viable option. If you are ever getting new carpet in your home, you should ask the installers if you can keep the scraps when they are finished. This gives you the option of repair later down the road if you should need it.

When Carpet Repair May be the Best Choice

There are many spills and stains that can be repaired so that you don’t have to face the cost of replacement. Even the toughest stains that seem to be lingering even after a professional cleaning, can be cut out of the carpet and replaced by a patch so that you don’t see the stain anymore. This is a way to completely erase the problem at a lower cost. Also, if you have noticed that your carpet is starting to ripple or bubble in places, you may want to consider repair rather than replacement. The carpet can simply be stretched to erase the ripples that are there now and leave you with taut carpet that can still give you several years of use.

When Carpet Should Be Replaced

If you have sustained any carpet damage as a result of water, you may be looking at replacement rather than repair. It can be difficult to remove the staining and risk of mold that comes with any severe water damage. Even if you decide that you are going to keep the carpet rather than replace it, you must replace the carpet pad beneath it. Another thing that turns people to replacement rather than repair is purchasing a new home. Many people want to know that they are the only ones that have used the carpet found in a home and may turn to replacement if the budget allows it.

It is inevitable that the carpets will suffer from spills. Whether you are a chronically clumsy or just has an off day, the carpets eventually suffer. Commonly spilled on carpets is milk as it is frequently drunk by adults and kids alike as well as frequently used in cereal and other foods. Milk is one of the common stains on carpets because of its commonality, and though it is not as scary looking as red wine, it can be worse if not immediately cleaned. With the help of household ingredients, you can usually remove the milk and any potential stains and odors in most instances. We at Carpet Care 2000 would like to take the opportunity to share a few options to remove milk stains from your carpets.
Caution: No matter if you utilize one of our methods below or a commercial product, you are going to want to conduct patch test in an inconspicuous area to ensure the carpets are not compromised.

Get Dried Milk Out of Carpet with Mild Dish Soap / Diluted Ammonia

1) Absorb the excess milk with a blotting or patting technique with heavy pressure using a clean cloth, paper towel, or towel.
2) In your preferred container, mix 2 cups of warm water and 1 tbsp of liquid dishwashing soap. Dampen a clean cloth with the solution and blot the milk area. Repeat application and blotting as necessary until milk is removed.
3) Diluted ammonia can also effectively remove milk stains that needs more potency. In your choice of container, combine 2 cups of warm water and 1 tbsp of ammonia. Use the solution to treat a cloth and blot the residual milk stain.
4) Whether you were successful with the mild soap solution or needed to use the diluted ammonia, rinse the carpet with a fresh, water damp cloth well.
5) After the area is fully treated, be sure to dry the area thoroughly with a clean, dry towel.

Baking Soda to Clean Spilled Milk Out of Carpet

1) The excessive milk needs to be removed immediately by blotting with a dry towel or paper towel.
2) To blot the milk out, once the excess is removed, use a water-damp cloth.
3) Though corn starch can be effective in a pinch, baking soda is more ideal. With the carpet still damp, sprinkle baking soda or corn starch generously. Allow 30 minutes to let the baking soda dry. During the drying process it will extract the milk and neutralize odors. Once dry, vacuum the area well.

Vacuum Meaning

It’s no secret that it’s important to vacuum your carpet to keep it clean. However, upholstery is often over looked and just as important to vacuum on a regular basis. While your carpets should be cleaned a couple of times a week, your furniture could greatly benefit from a good vacuuming once a week as well. Many vacuums come with special attachments that make it a simple task that is worth setting some time aside to complete.

Polish the Wood on Your Upholstered Furniture

Many upholstered pieces aren’t entirely covered in fabric. Many pieces of furniture have metal or wood on them as well in the form of legs and arms. To keep up with the wear and tear on these pieces of furniture, it is important to do polishing. For metal, it is best to use a gently cleaning solution. For wood, polishing is the best way to clean it.

Know Recommendations of Sofa Manufacturers

Every piece of furniture is different with different fabrics used in their production. Before you get started on cleaning them, you need to know and understand the best way to care for them. This is best done by following the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations. Common decoding of the labels include: WS (Safe to clean with mild detergent), S (dry clean detergent only), X (do not use water, only vacuum) and W (safe to clean with water).

Remove Old Stains from Upholstery

Even when you are as careful as possible, spills and stains are bound to happen. It is important that you take care of these spots and stains as soon as you notice they are there. Once you have figured out what to use to safely clean your furniture, you are set to get rid of any staining that has accidentally happened. Most fabrics we recommend you blot rather than scrub to remove any spills as scrubbing can damage the fabric.
